Nearly 25 years after the first Harry Potter movie was released, HBO is starting a fresh take on the series with a brand new cast. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will be taking over the roles previously played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. So far, only one actor from the original films is confirmed to return, sparking debate among fans about whether the original stars will make an appearance.
Interest in a potential reunion of the original Harry Potter trio has grown, especially after Tom Felton – known for playing Draco Malfoy – returned to the Wizarding World. He didn’t just make an appearance; he actually reprised his role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, leading fans to hope that Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson might do the same.
In an interview with the BBC, Rupert Grint said he’s not sure if he’d ever reprise his role in the Harry Potter films. He mentioned that ‘maybe someday’ is possible, but added, ‘while I really enjoyed my time with Harry Potter, I’m currently happy exploring different roles and projects.’
Although he’s not interested in returning to the Harry Potter world himself, Rupert Grint would be open to his children appearing in future projects, saying, “It was so much fun.” He also feels fondly about the impact and lasting popularity of the series.
Grint explained the series resonates deeply with his generation and is even more meaningful to those discovering it now. He expressed pride in being a part of something so significant, admitting he doesn’t expect to ever fully escape being known for the role, and he’s perfectly comfortable with that.
Grint recently shared that he wrote a letter to the new Ron Weasley actor, just as Radcliffe had done for the previous actor. He described it as ‘passing the baton’ before filming began.
Grint said he was simply wishing Stout the best with the project. He shared that he really enjoyed his time working on the show and hopes Stout has a similar experience. He still has vivid memories of every moment and is glad the show will now take its own direction. In a lighthearted comment, Grint also noted that he sees a bit of a family connection between himself and Stout.
I’m so excited for the new Harry Potter series coming to HBO! They’re planning to release it in 2027, though we don’t have a specific date yet. What’s even more amazing is that they’re already starting to work on season two, even before season one has aired! It seems like they’re really committed to bringing this story to life.
