According to Jason Schreier, a well-respected reporter at Bloomberg, several of Xbox’s game development studios are reportedly very happy about the possibility of releasing their games on the PlayStation 5.
Last year, Microsoft initially said it would release a few games specifically for Sony’s PlayStation. Now, it seems almost all of their major game releases are also coming to PlayStation.
And for the teams inside Xbox, this is a welcome change.
I was reading an interview with a Bloomberg journalist over at 404 Media, and they were talking about Microsoft’s shifting plans and how they seem to be aiming for a 30% profit on everything. It got me thinking about the PlayStation 5, and the journalist shared some interesting insight into how the teams working on that transition are really feeling about everything. It sounds like things are… complicated, to say the least!
He said:
Many Xbox-exclusive games are included with Game Pass, which likely reduces their individual sales because subscribers can access them for a lower price than buying them outright. This creates financial challenges for the game studios involved. Interestingly, many of these studios are now happy to release their games on PlayStation – something that’s only started happening in the past year.
Popular games like Gears of War Reloaded and Forza Horizon 5 came out on PlayStation 5 this year and were a huge success, proving Microsoft’s approach was right. This led to the exciting announcement of Halo: Campaign Evolved earlier this month.
Halo Studios announced that future Halo games will be released on PlayStation, suggesting all new titles will be available on Sony’s consoles.
Okay, so Microsoft says they’re still planning new consoles, but honestly, Xbox Series X|S sales have totally stalled. And it’s kinda weird – Game Pass, which is awesome, is actually hurting their full game sales. It’s like, why buy a game when you can play so much for a monthly fee? It’s a bit of a double-edged sword for them, I guess.
After acquiring Bethesda and Activision, Microsoft executives are pushing for increased profits. As a result, the company is now planning to release its games on PlayStation 5, where games continue to sell well at their full retail price.
