The final season of Stranger Things starts in just a few days, with Netflix releasing the first part of season five later this week. Fans are thrilled to see their favorite characters return after a long break and are eager to find out how creators Matt and Ross Duffer will wrap up the story. Plus, the Stranger Things universe isn’t ending with the main series – the Duffer brothers have confirmed that the previously announced spin-off is still in development at Netflix.
The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, recently spoke with Deadline about the show’s future after its fifth season. Interestingly, they’ve moved to a new deal with Paramount, allowing them to work on projects outside of Stranger Things. However, they still own the rights to the show and will be involved in any related projects, including a live-action spin-off that will follow a member of the Hawkins crew.
Matt confirms they’re making progress on the spin-off, revealing that Finn Wolfhard actually figured out the show’s premise. “Netflix was really eager to find out what it was about, but we kept it secret,” Matt explains. “Finn was the only one who guessed correctly.” Ross adds that Finn might not even remember his correct guess, as he recently suggested a different idea. He jokingly suggests Finn may have been teasing them. Matt then reiterated how lucky Finn’s initial guess was.
It’s amusing, actually. There was a lot of concern when he accidentally let slip what the spin-off series was about – I think he simply forgot he’d mentioned it. I need to discuss it with him, but now everyone at Netflix is aware and really enthusiastic. I’m thrilled with the team we’ve put together, though I can’t share details just yet to avoid causing problems. We’re aiming to move quickly with the project, so hopefully, we’ll have more news and it will launch soon.
What Will Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things’ Spin-Off Be About?

At this stage, the planned Stranger Things spin-off could center around almost any character. Of course, the series finale might change things, as some characters are likely to die. While Matt Duffer hasn’t revealed who the spin-off will focus on, he has confirmed it will be quite different from the original show, and that he and Ross Duffer will remain actively involved, even with their new deal at Paramount.
Ross and I have a spinoff idea we’re really enthusiastic about. It’s going to be quite different from Stranger Things, and we want to make sure anything with that title feels special and is high quality. The most important thing is that it comes from genuine passion, not just because it feels like something we should do. We’ve seen too many projects forced into existence, and at some point, the audience gets tired of them. Even though we’re moving to Paramount, Ross and I will stay heavily involved, and we’re actually working on the spinoff right now.
The fifth and final season of Stranger Things will arrive on Netflix in two parts. Volume 1 will be available starting November 26, 2025, with Volume 2 coming on December 25, and the very last episode will be released on December 31st.
