Hideo Kojima Remembers Udo Kier After OD Star’s Sudden Passing

Hideo Kojima has expressed his sadness following the unexpected death of actor Udo Kier, who was going to be in Kojima’s upcoming game, OD. Kier, a well-known German character actor famous for roles in films like Blade, Armageddon, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, passed away over the weekend at 81 years old. Kojima, who recently worked with Kier, shared his condolences and grief.

Hideo Kojima shared a message on social media expressing his sadness and shock over the passing of actor Kier. He explained they had stayed in touch regularly by email and had recently met just a few months ago. Kojima also mentioned that Kier hadn’t finished recording his parts for the game OD, with more sessions planned for 2026. He remembered Kier as an icon and said he would always cherish his memory.

Kojima expressed his shock and sadness, saying he was speechless at the sudden news. The production of OD had been delayed for a long time due to the strike, forcing them to postpone filming until next year. Throughout the delay, he and Udo stayed in regular contact via email. When they met in Milan in late September, Udo was enthusiastic about the upcoming shoot and full of his characteristic humor, making Kojima laugh. Kojima is still struggling to process the loss.

Kojima shared that Udo was more than just an actor; he was a true icon of his generation. ‘We’ve lost a great icon,’ Kojima said, adding that Udo was one of a kind and would be deeply missed. ‘Rest in peace, Udo. I’ll never forget him.’

Hideo Kojima hasn’t yet explained how the death of Troy Baker’s character, Kier, will affect the game OD. Since Kier hadn’t finished recording his lines, the team will likely need to either recast the role or rewrite parts of the script to address the unrecorded scenes. However, these production changes are secondary to the sadness of Kier’s passing.

OD is currently in the works at Kojima Productions and remains without a release window.
