A beloved Disney animated series is returning to television after 17 years, and fans will be thrilled to hear why. Disney has created many popular animated movies and TV shows, and some have become real favorites for both animation enthusiasts and longtime viewers. Now, one of these shows is getting a fresh start with a major comeback.
Good news for fans of The Emperor’s New School! The show is coming back to television. Episodes will begin airing on Disney XD starting December 10th at 5:30pm Eastern and Pacific time. This is exciting because the series hasn’t had new episodes since it ended in 2008, meaning a whole new audience will get to discover it – or revisit it as it was originally shown.
Why Is This Show Coming Back?

Many Disney fans consider The Emperor’s New School a surprisingly good show from the late 2000s, but it doesn’t often get mentioned among the most popular animated series. With The Emperor’s New Groove celebrating its 25th anniversary on December 15th, the show is getting a renewed spotlight. The Emperor’s New School serves as a prequel to the original movie, showing a younger Kuzco and his friends navigating the ups and downs of school life.
With two seasons and 52 episodes, The Emperor’s New School was a great fit for continued broadcast. Although it only aired for two years, the show was a hit on Disney Channel, just like the original movie, The Emperor’s New Groove. While the movie wasn’t a blockbuster in theaters, it found a large audience through home video and television, and the series was a natural way to build on that success.
What Made This Spinoff Different

When The Emperor’s New School first came out, critics weren’t very impressed, largely because it felt very similar in tone and humor to the original movie. Fans enjoyed the original’s playful breaking of the fourth wall and its sarcastic style, and the series continued those elements. The show also cleverly connected to the film’s story by establishing that Kuzco had to graduate from ‘Kuzco Academy’ to become the Emperor we meet at the start of the movie.
A significant change happened with the voice of Kuzco. David Spade, who originally voiced the character in The Emperor’s New Groove, was replaced by J.P. Manoux. Manoux did a great job mimicking Spade’s voice, so many fans didn’t notice the switch for years. Now that the show is being re-aired on Disney XD, it’s sure to bring back fond memories for longtime viewers.
