Advances in generative AI are probably going to cause console prices to increase again, and gamers won’t be able to avoid these higher costs.
Microsoft is facing criticism after increasing the cost of Xbox consoles and Game Pass subscriptions. Now, rising prices for DRAM, a type of computer memory, are expected to cause another price increase for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
Insiders Say More Xbox Price Increases Are Coming in 2026
According to YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, Microsoft is telling people within the industry that a huge jump in DRAM prices – up 70% compared to last year – could lead to another price increase for game consoles, and that increase might happen soon.
Recent increases in DRAM prices are mainly due to an agreement made in October between Samsung and SK Hynix to supply nearly half of the world’s DRAM to OpenAI. This large commitment of DRAM for OpenAI’s data centers, specifically those related to the Stargate project, is reducing the amount available for other companies like Microsoft.
According to Tom, the host of Moore’s Law is Dead, Microsoft didn’t prepare for recent developments, and Xbox prices could increase or the consoles could become unavailable. He says multiple sources within Microsoft’s sales team have warned him that these changes will happen very soon for the Xbox Series consoles.
According to Tom, the price of PlayStation consoles probably won’t be impacted by recent events. He says Sony anticipated potential supply issues and purchased a large amount of RAM when prices were low, giving them a good supply of GDDR6 for the foreseeable future. This information is based on what he’s been told.
Console prices have reached an all-time high, particularly in the United States. The Xbox Series X now costs $649.99, up from $599.99, and the Series S 1TB model has increased in price from $379 to $449.99.
This is the second time this year Xbox Series X/S consoles have become more expensive. Prices went up in May by $100 for the Series X and $80 for the Series S. At the same time, the monthly cost of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate increased from $19.99 to $29.99.
