What Happened to the Turok Games

For gamers who remember the Nintendo 64, Turok wasn’t just another shooting game—it showed everyone that consoles could be just as good as PCs. Before games like Halo and open-world survival became popular, and even before dinosaur games became their own thing, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter was a fast-paced, exciting adventure filled with exploration and prehistoric mayhem. However, despite being a well-known series, Turok gradually disappeared from the spotlight, leaving many dedicated fans wondering what happened to such a memorable franchise.

It’s a good time to revisit the history of Turok. After a long hiatus, the franchise is making a comeback with a new game in development that seems to be aiming for the feel of the original titles. However, because Turok hasn’t been prominently featured in over a decade – and one recent game is no longer available – many modern gamers aren’t aware of just how groundbreaking it once was. To understand the future of Turok, it’s important to look at its past, why it faded away, and what’s driving its return now.

Turok’s Upcoming Return: Turok: Origins

As a longtime Turok fan, I’ve spent years reading hopeful rumors and checking forums for any sign of a new game. And finally, in 2024, it’s happening! A new Turok game, Turok: Origins, is officially in development! They’re keeping details pretty quiet right now, but just knowing it’s coming after so long is huge. It shows the franchise still matters! The studio, Saber Interactive, hasn’t revealed much, but what little we’ve seen – early concepts and videos – suggests they’re going for a fresh, modern take on everything we love about Turok: dinosaurs, that cool tribal-future vibe, and tons of awesome weapons.

This news is especially noteworthy because the last Turok game, a 2008 reboot, was removed from online stores years ago. Complicated licensing and ownership changes made the game hard to find, only available to those who still had the original disc. When the most recent game is no longer for sale, it effectively makes the entire series disappear from view.

For a long time, the Turok series had been quiet. While Nightdive Studios did great work remastering the first two games, there hadn’t been any new plans or indication that the franchise would continue. The new game changes all of that, signaling a real belief in the future of Turok.

From N64 Classic to Forgotten Icon

To see why people are excited about the return of Turok, it’s important to remember how popular it once was. When Turok: Dinosaur Hunter came out on Nintendo 64 in 1997, it was a game-changer. Most console shooting games at the time felt awkward or basic, but Turok offered a more advanced experience, similar to what you’d find on a PC. It had large, open levels, allowed for lots of vertical movement, included platforming, and had smooth controls that made it feel faster than any other console game, including 007: Goldeneye.

Next came Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, a sequel that really stretched the capabilities of the Nintendo 64. It featured huge levels, frightening enemies, and memorable weapons – the Cerebral Bore being a prime example. For many of us, Seeds of Evil was one of the first first-person shooters that felt truly massive and immersive. I certainly lost myself in it, and it was a great experience. Turok 3 and Turok: Evolution followed, receiving generally positive, though sometimes mixed, reactions. Even when the games weren’t at their best, the series always maintained a unique identity with its blend of tribal themes, futuristic technology, and, of course, dinosaur-filled action.

By the mid-2000s, first-person shooter (FPS) games had changed a lot. Popular titles like Halo, Call of Duty, and Battlefield set a new standard, and players began to expect more cinematic, straightforward experiences. This meant that Turok’s distinctive style – focusing on exploration, unusual settings, and strange creatures – became less popular with most gamers.

The 2008 attempt to revive the series aimed for a more realistic and intense military sci-fi feel, but it missed the mark with longtime fans. Although it sold reasonably well, it wasn’t a huge success, and the developer, Propaganda Games, didn’t get to make any sequels. After the game was removed from sale, the franchise essentially disappeared.

Despite fading from the spotlight, the love for Turok never truly died. Fans of classic first-person shooters kept the original games popular through speedrunning, creating mods, and consistently asking for a modern remake. Nightdive Studios’ updated versions then reintroduced Turok to a new audience, reminding everyone what made the series so special.

Does the Turok Series Have a Future?

So, the big question is: could a new Turok game be successful today? I think it absolutely could, and the hints of a comeback are exciting. Modern gamers are open to new ideas and love revisiting classic franchises. We’ve seen FPS games like Doom: The Dark Ages, Shadow Warrior 3, Prey, and Metro Exodus prove that unique games can thrive without simply copying popular military shooters. Plus, dinosaur games are popular right now, with titles like ARK, Instinction, and Exoprimal doing well. This creates a perfect opportunity for a fast-paced, adventurous shooter that combines prehistoric action with sci-fi elements.

To truly recapture its glory, the new Turok needs to focus on what made the original great: powerful and imaginative weapons, levels designed for exploration, and a unique look blending ancient tribal designs with futuristic technology. Plus, the dinosaurs need to be genuinely threatening, quick, and hard to predict. Thankfully, from what we’ve seen so far, Saber Interactive appears ready to deliver all of that.

The next Turok game shouldn’t try to be dark and realistic, or follow popular trends like military or extraction-style shooters. Turok already has a unique identity, and what it really needs is a developer committed to bringing it back with a modern approach to first-person shooting. Simply relying on fans’ memories won’t be enough, but combining that nostalgia with updated gameplay could be really successful. After a long wait, both fans and the gaming landscape are primed for a new Turok, and it might just be the right time for a comeback.
