Paul Mescal isn’t sorry about keeping his loved ones close.
Playing William Shakespeare in Chloé Zhao’s film Hamnet, especially while portraying a challenging period in the playwright’s life, deeply changed how the actor—known for Normal People—sees the world.
Okay, seriously, after watching Paul’s new movie, it just hit me. He said it best – you can’t truly become the best you unless you have amazing people lifting you up. It made me think about how much we focus on going it alone these days, trying to forge our own path. But honestly? Paul’s right. It’s so much better, so much more fun, when you’re surrounded by people who genuinely want to give and receive love. It’s like, the journey is way more exciting when you’re not doing it all by yourself! I’ve been replaying that quote in my head ever since.
Paul learned this lesson again while filming the movie based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel about Shakespeare writing Hamlet while mourning his son Hamnet. He worked with Joe Alwyn and Jessie Buckley on the film, and continues to prioritize keeping his family and loved ones close, even when he’s in the public spotlight.
The Oscar nominee was accompanied by his girlfriend, Gracie Abrams, at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year for the debut of his film, History of Sound.
The couple didn’t pose for photos together on the red carpet, but they did coordinate their outfits. Their daughter wore a stunning black gown, while the 29-year-old paired with an all-black tuxedo. The daughter is the child of J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath.
A month after they started dating, the couple publicly confirmed their relationship on Instagram while attending the Glastonbury Festival. Gracie posted several photos and videos from the event, including one of her riding on her boyfriend’s shoulders during Olivia Rodrigo’s performance.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Paul and Gracie’s relationship, and while they’ve been pretty private, Gracie recently let slip a fascinating detail. She mentioned she’s taking a cue from her mentor, Taylor Swift, and channeling her experiences – including this past year – into her music. It’s a really smart way to share a bit of her heart without oversharing the details, and I expect we’ll be hearing more about it through her songwriting!
Gracie told TopMob News at the 2024 Grammys that she considers everything Taylor Swift says to be incredibly insightful. She explained that even before they met, Taylor inspired her to write consistently and honestly, a lesson she still follows today. Gracie credits that advice with her daily writing habit.
Starting November 27th, you can see the film Hamnet in theaters to get a glimpse into how Paul’s personal life influenced his performances. Stay tuned to discover more movies you won’t want to miss!
