Prime Video Just Added One of the Biggest Sci-Fi Box Office Bombs of 2025 (And You Need To See It)

As a sci-fi fan, I’ve been having a fantastic run lately, and 2025 hasn’t disappointed! We’ve gotten everything from blockbuster thrills like Jurassic World Rebirth to smart, thought-provoking stories like Companion. And while we’re all waiting for Avatar: Fire and Ash next month, I was really excited to see a hidden gem finally get some love – a movie that unfortunately flopped in theaters but is now streaming on Prime Video and totally deserves a watch.

Bong Joon Ho, the director of the Oscar-winning film Parasite, recently released his newest movie, Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson. While it didn’t perform well in theaters, it’s now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, starting November 26th. Based on Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel Mickey7, the sci-fi film features Pattinson as Mickey 17, a clone repeatedly created as part of a dangerous mission to colonize the frozen planet Niflheim. These clones are considered expendable, meaning they are disposable and replaced each time one dies.

As a movie fan, I remember when Mickey 17 came out in March and actually topped the box office with a $19 million opening weekend! But honestly, it quickly became clear it was a flop. While it eventually made around $133 million worldwide in theaters, Warner Bros. definitely lost money on it. Considering the movie cost $118 million to make – and that doesn’t even include all the money they spent on advertising – it was a pretty big financial disappointment.

Mickey 17 Is the Commercial Flop You Need to See

Okay, let me tell you about Mickey 17. Despite not doing well at the box office, this is a genuinely fantastic film and, in my opinion, one of the most underrated movies of the year. Critics clearly agree – it’s sitting pretty at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes with a “Certified Fresh” badge! It’s a visually stunning and wildly imaginative sci-fi experience, but at its heart, it’s a thoughtful exploration of what it means to be human when replication is possible. Director Bong Joon-ho has created something special, blending sci-fi, dark humor, and social commentary in a way that reminds me of Black Mirror. What really sets it apart is how incredibly detailed and believable these alien worlds feel, thanks to some truly impressive CGI and special effects. And Robert Pattinson? He gives what I think is the best performance of his career. He plays multiple versions of the character, Mickey, and flawlessly differentiates between them with subtle changes in voice and mannerisms. It’s a masterful performance, honestly.

I really loved Mickey 17, but it’s a shame it didn’t do better in cinemas. Thankfully, it’s a truly original and bold film, and people are finally discovering it! It really took off when it hit Max in May, staying popular on the streaming charts for weeks. Now that it’s on Prime Video too, I’m hoping it finds even more fans, but it’s still too soon to say if it’ll have the same streaming success.

What’s New on Prime Video?

Prime Video is ending November with the addition of Mickey 17, following a month of great new movie releases. Subscribers can also now stream popular films like Spider-Man: Homecoming, the holiday favorite Miracle on 34th Street, and the critically acclaimed Good Will Hunting starring Robin Williams.
