Paradox Interactive, the publisher of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, is taking a $37 million loss because the game didn’t sell as well as they had hoped. This means they are acknowledging that they won’t recover that amount of money spent on developing the game.
Paradox Interactive is taking full responsibility for the disappointing launch of the game and its mixed reviews. They acknowledge the game doesn’t fit their usual strengths and that they, as the publisher, are to blame.
The Swedish company is now prioritizing investment in its main businesses. It’s also considering the best way to grow the popular ‘World of Darkness’ brand. Recently, the company also dissolved the team responsible for the ‘Cities: Skylines’ game, while still owning the studios that created games like ‘Crusader Kings 3’ and ‘Stellaris’.
Although the exact sales figures for Bloodlines 2 haven’t been released, the game received a lukewarm reception, earning a score of 63 on Metacritic for the PS5 version last month. Our review criticized the game’s slow pace and numerous technical issues, ultimately giving it a 4 out of 10 rating.
CEO Frederik Wester’s statements come after creative director Dan Pinchbeck explained that Bloodlines 2 faced insurmountable problems from the start, once development began at The Chinese Room.
The game was initially approved ten years ago, but it’s changed hands between several development teams. Most recently, the studio behind Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture took over in September 2023.
I remember we spent so much time in meetings trying to figure out how to steer the project away from being called ‘Bloodlines 2’. It felt like our main goal was to constantly emphasize that this wasn’t going to be a sequel, and honestly, it just wasn’t feasible. We didn’t have the time or the budget to pull off something that would live up to the original ‘Bloodlines’!
In full, Wester of Paradox Interactive said:
We’re happy with how Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 turned out – it’s a compelling vampire game, and the developers did a great job. We anticipated strong sales given the game’s potential and the popularity of the vampire genre. Unfortunately, after a month, sales haven’t met our expectations, requiring us to adjust our financial projections.
