Netflix Sets January Premiere For New Series From Boys Over Flowers Creator

WIT Studio, known for animating the first three seasons of the popular show Attack on Titan and the Netflix original Great Pretender, recently released the sci-fi anime Moonrise on Netflix, which boasted stunning animation. They’re also working on a remake of One Piece, announced in December 2023. Beyond established franchises, WIT Studio continues to create original content for Netflix. Anime fans have another date to look forward to: Netflix Japan has confirmed that Love Through a Prism, a new story by famous manga artist Yoko Kamio (creator of Boys Over Flowers, Cat Street, and Matsuri Special), will premiere on January 15, 2026.

Published in 1996, Boys Over Flowers won a Shogakukan Manga Award and became a massive hit, selling over 61 million copies worldwide and becoming the best-selling shōjo manga ever. The author, Kamio, has been creating manga since 1989, but hasn’t released a new series since finishing Boys Over Flowers Season 2. She’s been quietly developing the story and characters for Love Through the Prism. The upcoming anime, produced by WIT Studio, will be directed by Kazuto Nakazawa, known for his work on popular shows like Samurai Champloo, B: The Beginning, and Terror in Resonance.

What Is Love Through the Prism About?

The story takes place in London in the early 1990s and centers on Lili Ichijouin, a Japanese student who comes to the renowned Saint Thomas Art Academy. Lili faces immense pressure from her parents – they’ll only allow her to continue studying if she achieves top grades. Determined to pursue her dream of becoming a painter, she strives for success, and along the way, she meets Kit Church, a talented but aloof fellow student.

Seeing Kit passionately paint inspires Lili to work harder and become more confident. As they spend time together, their connection grows beyond just a shared love of art, blossoming into a romance. Their relationship challenges them to overcome expectations and be true to themselves, even when facing disapproval from others.

I noticed the trailer hints at some challenges for the couple, mostly stemming from the differences in their backgrounds. As for the show, Love Through the Prism, we don’t know how many episodes there will be yet. But it looks like they might release the whole season at once in January, rather than airing one episode a week like most anime.
