2 Years Later, DC’s Underrated $130M Flop Finds the Audience It Deserves on Netflix (& the DCU Should Make a Sequel)

Generally, you can find DC movies on HBO Max, from the original Christopher Reeve films to the newer DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and even James Gunn’s Superman. But similar to Marvel movies, some DC titles occasionally appear on Netflix. Currently, one of the last movies from the DCEU is performing well on Netflix, which is good news considering the final four DCEU films—all released in 2023—didn’t do well in theaters.

The movie Blue Beetle, released on August 18, 2023, earned $130.8 million worldwide, despite costing over $125 million to make. While it wasn’t expected to be a blockbuster, its performance is actually better than being the lowest-grossing film in the DC Universe franchise suggests.

Why Did Blue Beetle Flop & How Is It Doing on Netflix?

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) struggled from the beginning. While Man of Steel performed decently, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, despite being a big financial success in 2016, didn’t quite live up to expectations. It was also quite dark in tone, a characteristic shared by the surprisingly popular, yet flawed, Suicide Squad. Wonder Woman found success in 2017, but Justice League caused further problems. Aquaman proved to be the last major hit for the series, with Shazam! achieving only moderate success and Birds of Prey unfortunately flopping, despite being a standout film within the universe.

Despite some promising entries, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) struggled to find consistent success. Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey were impacted by the pandemic, but The Suicide Squad—often considered one of the best superhero films—didn’t perform well, signaling audience fatigue. Black Adam proved to be the final nail in the coffin; even with a popular lead actor, it didn’t resonate with audiences. Shortly after its release, Warner Bros. announced the end of the DCEU, making the four movies planned for 2023 face even greater challenges.

Beyond decreasing fan enthusiasm for the series as a whole, several other things hurt the film’s performance. These included the Hollywood strikes in 2023, low awareness of the main character, and the unexpected impact of Hurricane Hilary.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed their plans for the new DC Universe, they stated that Blue Beetle – and actor Xolo Maridueña – would be included. While the movie’s storyline might not continue directly, Gunn clarified that the character’s portrayal would be carried over into the new universe.

With Blue Beetle now ranking among the top 10 films on Netflix in the US, it suggests there’s a real desire to see the character’s story continue within the DC Universe. An animated series is planned, with Xolo Maridueña hinting at a 2026 release last February, though progress has been slow since then. It’s still expected to happen, and if it’s successful – which seems more probable now that the movie is gaining popularity on streaming – it could lead to another live-action film.
