James Cameron shared Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, reaction to Avatar: Fire and Ash, letting us know what the studio head thinks of the new film. Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story of Jake Sully and his family, who now face conflict with the Mangkwan Na’vi clan, who are working with Quaritch. The movie will be released in theaters on December 19, 2025.
According to a report in Puck, director James Cameron shared that Disney CEO Bob Iger thought an early version of Avatar: The Seed Bearer (which was 18 minutes longer than the final cut) was “magnificent.” Cameron confirmed Iger defended the film against criticism from other studio executives during a conversation about it.
He’s a thoughtful observer and only offers his opinion when he feels he has something to contribute. He first watched an early cut—over three hours long—and even then, recognized its potential. He told me he knew I’d continue to refine it, but that it was already fantastic—essentially, he loved the film.
During the Zoom meeting, other leaders were sharing their notes, but he dismissed them. After that, I realized the discussion was over and there was no point in continuing.
Bob Iger’s positive comments are encouraging for the upcoming film, Avatar: Fire and Ash. The movie will explore new territory for the Avatar franchise, notably featuring Na’vi characters as the villains for the first time. It will also address the aftermath of Neteyam’s death from Avatar: The Way of Water and show how Jake Sully’s family deals with their loss.
The version of the film Bob Iger previewed was a bit longer than the version audiences will see in theaters. The final cut of Avatar: Fire and Ash runs for 195 minutes – 3 hours and 15 minutes, including the credits. Iger’s positive reaction suggests it will be another strong and imaginative addition to the Avatar series.
The upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash is adding several new actors to its cast. Oona Chaplin will play Varang, the leader of the Mangkwan people, while Edie Falco takes on the role of General Frances Ardmore, who replaces Quaritch as the head of the RDA. David Thewlis joins the cast as Peylak, the leader of the Wind Traders. These new characters are expected to significantly develop the world of Pandora and its central conflicts.
Bob Iger’s positive comments highlight Disney’s confidence in the new film, but it still needs to be a major financial success to ensure James Cameron can make the fourth and fifth Avatar movies. Current predictions estimate a domestic opening weekend of around $110 million, which is a bit lower than the $134.1 million earned by the second film.
Despite some uncertainty about the plot, with Bob Iger fully backing the film, Avatar: Fire and Ash is looking like a compelling sequel that takes the story of Pandora in a significant new direction. Disney’s CEO’s support suggests this could be the best Avatar movie yet.
Avatar: Fire and Ash arrives in theaters on December 19, 2025.
