Stephen King‘s stories have been turned into countless movies and TV shows, making him one of the most adapted authors ever. While many adaptations, like Carrie, Salem’s Lot, and the recent It: Welcome to Derry, have been huge successes, others haven’t resonated with viewers or critics. In fact, one particularly unsuccessful adaptation is about to be removed from Netflix.
The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower hasn’t been well-received by fans, and it will soon be removed from Netflix. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the film is loosely based on King’s book series and stars Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey, and Tom Taylor. The story follows a young boy with special abilities and a skilled gunslinger as they work together to safeguard the Dark Tower, a powerful, magical structure that keeps the universe from falling apart. It will no longer be available to stream on December 1st.
What Went Wrong With The Dark Tower?
It’s nearly impossible to fit the complex, interwoven story of King’s epic series into one movie, and this film unfortunately demonstrated why. Instead of focusing on a single book from the eight-part series, the movie tried to combine elements from across the whole story, leaving it feeling both cluttered and hollow. The plot felt hurried and confusing, failing to capture the special atmosphere of the books. The short length of the movie forced it to simplify the rich mythology and didn’t allow enough time to develop the characters or build a believable world.
As a big Stephen King fan, I was really disappointed with The Dark Tower movie. It just didn’t quite work, and honestly, it didn’t feel like it deserved a sequel. It didn’t satisfy those of us who loved the books, and it didn’t seem to grab anyone who wasn’t familiar with them either. Critics definitely didn’t love it – it got a really low score on Rotten Tomatoes. Even Stephen King himself admitted it was tough trying to fit such a massive series into one film, and he felt the PG-13 rating held it back because the books are so much darker and more intense.
While Arcel’s film is still the only Dark Tower adaptation to reach audiences, a new version is being developed that hopes to be a more faithful take on Stephen King’s story. Mike Flanagan is creating a TV series planned to span multiple seasons, allowing for a more detailed and thorough exploration of the books’ complex plot and characters.
Where to Stream The Dark Tower After It Leaves Netflix?
Currently, you can only stream The Dark Tower on Netflix, and it looks like that will remain the case. It won’t be added to other major streaming services in December, so November 30th is your last chance to watch it on a streaming service before it’s removed. However, you’ll still be able to rent or buy the movie online.
