For a while, fans of classic side-scrolling beat ’em up games had very few new options. The pixelated art style common in those games was often seen as outdated—a thing of the past—until the rise of independent game development in the late 2000s. Now, retro game lovers have plenty of choices across many different genres. When it comes to the beat ’em up genre specifically, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge really raised the quality, and the team behind it seems poised to deliver an even better experience with their next project.
Get ready for Marvel Cosmic Invasion, a brand-new game that feels like a classic 90s arcade fighter, but with updated features! It has a large selection of characters and a unique team-up system. Whether you used to spend hours playing these games in arcades or are a newer fan of Marvel, this game offers exciting, retro-style action that’s definitely worth checking out. Here are 15 things to know before you jump in and battle the cosmic enemies with your friends.
From TMNT to Marvel
Before we dive into how the game plays, it’s good to know this isn’t just another generic Marvel fighting game. The publisher, Dotemu, has released several popular titles this year, like the indie game Absolum and Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. The game is being developed by Tribute Games, the team behind the acclaimed TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. Marvel Cosmic Invasion builds on everything that made Shredder’s Revenge so enjoyable, offering four times as many playable characters and a host of new additions.
Classic Beat ’em Up Fun
Tribute Games continues its tradition of classic beat ‘em up games with its latest title. Marvel Cosmic Invasion really captures the feel of 90s brawlers, both in how you play and in its over-the-top Marvel story that takes place across the galaxy. It’s a classic side-scrolling beat ‘em up: enemies appear as you move across the screen, culminating in a memorable boss battle at the end of each stage. What really stands out, especially for those who grew up in the 90s, is the vibrant and colorful art style.
Sublime Pixel Art

It’s amazing how Tribute Games consistently creates such visually stunning games! The graphics in their latest title are incredibly vibrant and cartoonish, almost bursting off the screen with color and contrast. Compared to their previous game, Shredder’s Revenge, Marvel Cosmic Invasion features a wider variety of environments, from exotic wildlife to detailed space stations. They’ve perfectly captured the 90s Marvel comic art style, and combined with the beautiful pixel art, it’s a real treat for fans of retro comics and arcade games.
Locations
A unique part of the game is set in the Negative Zone, a rarely seen location in movies and games. Players will battle across diverse environments, including broken anti-matter stations and a detailed recreation of New York City. The demo’s second level takes place on the famous SHIELD helicarrier from The Avengers, and previews show off glimpses of the prehistoric Savage Lands and Asgard from Thor. It looks like each character will have their own dedicated stage to fight on.
Huge Character Roster
With so many Marvel characters available, there’s a ton of potential for different arenas in the game. It will launch with 15 playable characters, and it’s a really interesting mix! The developers at Tribute Games didn’t just choose the most popular heroes – they included some lesser-known ones like Beta Ray Bill and Phylla-Vell. The full list of characters includes Black Panther, Captain America, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Iron Man, Nova, Phoenix, Rocket Raccoon, She-Hulk, Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, Storm, and Venom.
It’s strange the Fantastic Four aren’t included, considering the story involves the Negative Zone, which makes you wonder if they’ll be added in future updates.
Voice Acting

What’s really cool about the game’s big cast of characters is that every single one has full voice acting. Many fans of Marvel cartoons and games will recognize the voice actors. Cal Dodd, who voiced Wolverine in the classic X-Men Animated Series and other 90s shows, returns to the role. Josh Keaton voices Spider-Man, and the legendary Steve Blum delivers a suitably menacing performance as Venom.
Honestly, as a huge Marvel fan, I’m totally expecting some awesome voice actor to drop a mysterious line at the end of the game, and then BAM! – the Human Torch’s flaming hand appears. It just feels like a classic Marvel move, you know?
Plot: Annihilus and the Negative Zone
The story also suggests a link to the Fantastic Four, with Annihilus as the primary villain driving the cosmic invasion. Although Annihilus and his forces first appeared in a 1966 Fantastic Four comic, he’s been a threat to the Avengers as well. The big question is whether Nova will defeat him as he did in the comics, or if the game will surprise us with a twist involving the Negative Zone. We’ll find out how things unfold by playing the game!
4-Player Split-Screen and Online Co-op
You can enjoy the full game with up to four players, both locally and online. Similar to Shredder’s Revenge, you can easily join a friend’s game at any point during a level, and the game supports crossplay, letting you play with friends on different platforms.
Cosmic Swap Tag-Team System

A really cool part of the game is the tag-team system. It feels fresh because the game takes ideas from other genres and blends them into the fighting style in a unique way. Instead of picking just one character at the start, you choose two. This makes playing with four players feel like you’re commanding a team of heroes, with eight characters swapping in and out of battle. Similar to other games, you can perform special combo moves that are specific to the two characters you’ve teamed up. I predict many players, including myself, will enjoy trying out all the different tag-team combinations!
Unique Fighting Styles
Each hero in the game offers a unique way to play, going beyond simple team-up moves. This isn’t just about how they look; it affects how they move, defend themselves, and what special abilities they have. For example, Captain America can block and even deflect attacks, which is a new feature for a game like Shredder’s Revenge. He can even bounce bullets off his shield if you time it right! Spider-Man, on the other hand, focuses on aerial combat and providing ranged support, making him a great partner for a strong, defensive hero like She-Hulk. Marvel Cosmic Invasion has a varied cast of characters that really seem to encourage different strategies and team combinations.
Dynamic, Combo-Forward Combat

Despite having very different playstyles, all characters are controlled using a similar system. This system includes a standard melee attack, jump, dodge, a special move unique to each character, and a powerful ultimate attack that can usually clear out most enemies – though not bosses.
Special Moves
Special moves require a resource called ‘focus’ to use. You build up focus by hitting enemies, and it fills up quickly since you’ll be attacking often in this fast-paced game. In the demo, you can use special moves frequently enough that it makes the game a little too easy. Luckily, the game offers different difficulty levels if you want a tougher experience.
Playable Demo
I mentioned a demo, and it’s now available on Steam for anyone to try! Unfortunately, PlayStation and Nintendo players don’t have access to it just yet. The Steam demo includes 9 out of the 15 playable heroes and lets you experience two different stages. You can even play online with friends to test out hero combinations before the game officially releases.
PC Specs
Because Cosmic Invasion uses a classic pixel art style, it doesn’t require a powerful computer to run. Most laptops from the last decade will handle it without any problems. Even with the highest settings, you only need at least an Intel Core i3-540 processor. Plus, it’s very efficient, taking up just 1 GB of storage space.
Price

At just $29.99, the price is great! Marvel Cosmic Invasion is really fun because it’s a classic-style beat ‘em up that’s easy to pick up and play. I’m excited to explore the mysterious Negative Zone when this game releases on December 1st.
