Chief of War Trailer Reveals Jason Momoa’s Next Epic Warrior Role

In the initial trailer for “Chief of War,” Jason Momoa is gearing up for conflict. This sneak peek was unveiled on Thursday before the series debuts on Apple TV+ on August 1st. The story revolves around Momoa’s character, Ka’iana, a Native Hawaiian who voyaged across the globe in the late 1700s and later returned home to ready his people for the arrival of Western explorers, merchants, and colonizers. Inspired by real-life events, the show appears to meticulously portray life in pre-colonial Hawaii. Known for his roles as warriors in science fiction and fantasy, Momoa’s action sequences in this more realistic tale remain just as captivating.

In collaboration with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, Momoa co-created “Chief of War ” to share one of the legendary tales about Hawaii’s colonization. Momoa portrays the enigmatic character Ka’iana, who traveled across the globe as a companion to European traders and later came back home to narrate his adventures. The trailer suggests his voyages through a scene where he is wrapped in furs on a snowy peak, although the main events unfold primarily within Hawaii.

In the trailer, Ka’iana cautions others about his interactions with Westerners, hinting they might seize whatever they can from the island, disregarding the desires of the native people. Yet, it’s uncertain where Ka’iana aligns in the internal power struggles on the islands. The sneak peek shows him engaging in combat with other Hawaiians, and he appears to oppose Kamehameha (Kaina Makua)’s vision of a unified monarchy ruling over all the islands.

The trailer showcases awe-inspiring scenes, such as warriors deftly catching flying spears and swiftly gliding down slopes made of volcanic rock on sleds. It also hints at a character-centric narrative, which might deviate slightly from the authentic historical depictions of Ka’iana’s life. However, knowing the ending won’t diminish its appeal as captivating television.

The show titled “Chief of War” has been under development since 2015, and it was Apple TV+ who greenlit the series in 2022. This streaming platform has a history of collaborating successfully with Jason Momoa, who graced our screens in the drama series See. Known for his ardor towards Hawaii and his Native Hawaiian roots, Momoa even participated in a protest on the islands against the construction of a telescope on a sacred spiritual site in 2019.

In 1778, British explorers accidentally discovered Hawaii while they were voyaging, becoming the first Europeans to document a visit there. Over the subsequent years, their visits combined elements of trade and conflict. Regrettably, just like in the Americas, European diseases brought to Hawaii proved devastating for the native population. The depiction suggests that violence intensified during the early 1800s, as portrayed in this series.

We’ll see more for ourselves very soon, as Chief of War premieres on August 1st on Apple TV+.
