Macaulay Culkin became famous as a child actor in movies like Home Alone, Uncle Buck, and Richie Rich. Recently, he revealed some surprising information about his popular 1991 film, My Girl, where he starred as Thomas alongside Anna Chlumsky, who played Vada.
The movie My Girl centers around Vada, a young girl preoccupied with death, who is tragically confronted by it when her best friend, Thomas, unexpectedly passes away. While many viewers remember the powerful emotional response to Thomas’s death, the scene itself—where he’s attacked by bees—is particularly infamous. Macaulay Culkin, who played Thomas, has said the scene, which showed him in serious danger, would likely be considered unacceptable by today’s standards, suggesting the production may have gone too far in trying to make it realistic.
During an appearance on the podcast On Film… with Kevin McCarthy, Macaulay Culkin discussed the famous bee scene from the movie My Girl. He revealed that the filmmakers actually used real bees – thousands of them! Culkin, who was only 10 years old at the time, explained that they put something on his finger to attract the bees. Though he was assured he wasn’t in danger, he almost got stung during filming. The directions he received for the scene were minimal, which made the experience potentially upsetting.
Someone asked me to wave my arms around so the bees would fly in front of my face – it was all for the camera.
Macaulay Culkin Had a Harrowing Early Career
Beyond the upsetting bee death scene in My Girl, Macaulay Culkin also talked about a scene where he and co-star Anna Chlumsky had to jump into a lake. He mentioned the various animals the filmmakers dealt with – and sometimes harmed – during filming, adding that some of those actions wouldn’t be acceptable by today’s standards.
These trappers used a strange baiting system. They’d catch venomous water moccasins, cut them up, and use those pieces to catch snapping turtles. Then they’d cut up the snapping turtles to bait alligators. It just made me wonder why they weren’t fishing in a swimming pool instead!
After the film My Girl was made, details emerged about a difficult relationship between Macaulay Culkin and his father. Kit Culkin pushed his son to work constantly, leading to challenging negotiations with film studios as Macaulay became famous. Although Macaulay continues to act – currently providing voice work for Zootopia 2 – many fans observe a slowdown in his career after he legally emancipated from his father in 1997, with experiences like those during the making of My Girl contributing to the family issues.
