40 Years Ago Today, Wally West Redefined the Flash Mantle

The Flash is a cornerstone of DC Comics, with Barry Allen initially launching the Silver Age of comics and popularizing the idea of the multiverse. Despite Barry’s importance, Wally West – the third Flash – is actually the most beloved character to take on the role. Wally revitalized the Flash, building upon the established legacy and adding many of the elements fans associate with the character today. Forty years ago marked the beginning of Wally’s journey as the Flash, and his impact has been significant ever since.

Wally West became the Flash in issue #12 of Crisis on Infinite Earths after Barry Allen died saving the universe from the Anti-Monitor. Wally had previously retired due to a condition that worsened the faster he ran, but he returned to fight when the entire multiverse was at risk. The battle with the Anti-Monitor resulted in Barry’s death, but also miraculously cured Wally’s illness. Inspired by his mentor’s ultimate sacrifice, Wally embraced the Flash mantle, and his legacy continues to be felt decades later.

The Importance of Legacy

DC Comics has always emphasized the idea of passing on heroic mantles to new generations. This is often seen through sidekicks, like Robin, or when a hero’s identity is taken up by someone new. One key change involved the way stories were told. Earlier Flash comics focused on Barry Allen as a somewhat isolated hero, with the plot revolving mainly around him, even though he had friends. When Wally West took over, the stories became much more focused on his relationships with others – his romances, his role as a mentor, and his experiences as a father. Wally was also a more outgoing and humorous character than Barry, who was presented as a classic, almost perfect hero. Interestingly, when Barry returned as the main Flash, he started to show some of Wally’s more vibrant and flawed personality traits.

Wally West is incredibly important to the Flash’s history. He shaped the modern idea of the hero, greatly expanded the Flash’s stories and background, and made the role feel relatable and full of life. Having been the Flash for four decades, Wally deserves recognition for consistently being the fastest hero around.
