James Gunn Confirms 5 DC Movies & TV Shows He’s Actively Developing Right Now

James Gunn recently shared on social media that he’s currently developing five DC movies and TV shows. As co-CEO of DC Studios, he’s entering his fourth year leading all of DC’s film and television projects. This involves both supporting other filmmakers’ visions and working on projects himself, like he did this year with the movie Superman.

James Gunn is incredibly busy, but he still makes time to respond to fans online, something he’s known for doing. Recently, he answered a fan’s question on Threads about what a typical day is like as a co-CEO of DC Studios.

Gunn pointed out that the best part of his job is its unpredictability – every day is different – because his responsibilities are so diverse. He then shared that he’s currently involved in five different film and TV projects at DC.

What I love about this job is that every day is different! Right now, I’m mostly focused on getting ‘Man of Tomorrow’ ready – that means storyboarding, having meetings with different teams, finding locations, and casting actors. I also review cuts of ‘Supergirl’ and ‘Lanterns,’ talk about marketing plans for all our projects, read and give feedback on new scripts, and make sure everything is running smoothly with ‘The Batman 2.’ I’m eagerly awaiting the first draft of ‘Clayface,’ and I’m constantly approving designs for various things – plus, there’s probably a lot I’m leaving out!

Just last month, Gunn shared a comparable update with fans, but the previous list was quite different, highlighting the sheer number of projects DC Studios is currently working on.

As a big fan of James Gunn’s work, I’ve been following everything he’s doing with DC Studios. Here’s a complete look at all the TV shows and movies he’s currently involved with – it’s a really exciting time for DC!

Every DC Project James Gunn Is Actively Working On

Man of Tomorrow

James Gunn is currently focused on Man of Tomorrow (also known as Superman 2), the upcoming 2027 Superman sequel. He’s writing and directing the film, and production is scheduled to begin in Spring 2027.

James Gunn recently posted a picture online showing a large collection of storyboards he’s created for the upcoming movie, and revealed he’s already written at least four drafts of the script.

James Gunn has a lot of responsibilities as head of DC Studios, but he’s currently giving a lot of attention to the film Man of Tomorrow. It’s scheduled to be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Supergirl

Following the success of Superman, Supergirl will be the second major movie released as part of James Gunn’s new DC Universe timeline next year.

James Gunn isn’t involved in writing or directing this space-themed story. Craig Gillespie, known for the film I, Tonya, is now in charge of the project. The script is being written by Ana Nogueira, who is also working on the new Wonder Woman movie for the DC Universe.

James Gunn recently shared that he’s currently reviewing edits to the Supergirl movie and talking about how to market it. This is happening with only a few months left until the film comes out on June 26, 2026.

Lanterns

In a similar vein to Supergirl, Lanterns is another DCU project quickly heading toward release.

The upcoming Green Lantern TV series, similar in style to True Detective, has finished filming. According to James Gunn, who heads DC Studios, he’s been receiving cuts of the show to review, and it’s expected to premiere on HBO next summer.

James Gunn wants to give filmmakers a lot of creative freedom within the new DC Universe, but all projects will still need his approval. This is to make sure everything fits together logically and to set up potential future storylines he has in mind.

Batman 2

Unlike most DC projects, James Gunn won’t be heavily involved with The Batman 2. This sequel is considered a standalone story, existing outside the main DC Universe he’s building.

This indicates that the upcoming Gotham movie will reflect the unique creative choices of its writer and director, Matt Reeves, and won’t necessarily align with the larger story plan James Gunn has for the DC Universe.

James Gunn isn’t completely hands-off with The Batman 2, though. He’s been giving Matt Reeves feedback on the script and offering support to the production team as the movie moves closer to starting in 2026.

Clayface

The next DCU film announced by James Gunn – the fifth project he revealed on Threads – is a movie based on the popular character, Clayface. Fans have been eagerly awaiting this one.

The upcoming 2026 DC movie, written by horror expert Mike Flanagan, promises to be a creatively bold take on the DC Universe, delivering a terrifying body horror story. Director James Gunn recently shared that he’s eagerly awaiting the first rough cut featuring Clayface, as the film nears its release date of September 11, 2026.

The upcoming film will be a crucial test of James Gunn’s plan for a DC Universe with a variety of genres. It’s also particularly important because it’s the first DCU project set in Gotham City, a location that will likely play a major role in the future of the franchise.
