Good news for fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong – Team Cherry has officially announced that the game will get new content! However, the big question of when that content will arrive remains unanswered, even for the game’s creators, Ari Gibson and William Penn.
I was reading an interview with the developer, and they explained that the long wait for Silksong wasn’t some grand seven-year plan. They’re not trying to take forever, but they’re still sticking to their development style, and sometimes that means things just take a little longer than expected.
It’s not unexpected that Silksong is receiving new content. Hollow Knight also got downloadable content relatively soon after release – Hidden Dreams came out just six months later. However, as Gibson points out, that DLC was often quite limited in scope.
We’re now thinking about how to build stronger narratives around both smaller additions and the core game itself. Unlike some of the expansions for Hollow Knight, where we just added a few bosses with a simple setup, we want to create more developed story structures for future content.”
Now that Hornet has a distinct personality and can think for herself, we need to explore her reactions to new additions to the game. Letting her respond to these changes will naturally drive the story forward, and could even allow us to create a larger, more expansive update.
It’s well known that Silksong started as downloadable content for Hollow Knight but grew into a complete game on its own. We don’t know if this pattern will happen again, but Team Cherry seems to be happy with their work.
When asked how long they typically work on a title before moving to the next one, Penn explained that they don’t focus on time limits. Instead, they concentrate on developing strong ideas and creating the content they want to include.
Penn also mentioned they have plans for future games. The biggest limiting factor is time – developing a game takes around seven years, and they could potentially work on it for another two. They’d like to create a few more titles, and their current schedule seems to allow for it, as long as everything goes smoothly.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and both Nintendo Switch models. It quickly gained popularity, reaching over five million players in just three days. While the developers, Team Cherry, haven’t released official sales figures, reports suggest that “millions” of copies have been sold.
