Fans have been waiting for 14 years, and now ABC has released a first look at the new Scrubs revival! The footage brings back familiar faces from the original series and introduces some new characters. However, viewers have quickly noticed two things: a major character is missing, and the show seems to be changing a key part of its original story. You can check out the new footage below.
The initial trailer for the new Scrubs series brings back familiar faces – J.D. (Zach Braff), Turk (Donald Faison), and Elliot (Sarah Chalke). J.D. anticipates a grand reception, but is met with confusion as people don’t seem to recognize him. We also see Carla (Judy Reyes) and Perry (John C. McGinley). However, noticeably absent is Neil Flynn, who famously played the Janitor. While many original cast members will return, it’s unclear if Flynn will reprise his beloved, comedic role, though fans are hoping for at least a brief appearance.
Fans are also buzzing about the doctors’ location, which seems to be the old ICU from the original Sacred Heart Hospital. Since that ICU was torn down when the original hospital was demolished, some believe the show might be changing its history – perhaps rewriting the events of its destruction from season eight.
It’s possible the ninth season was intentionally kept short. Many fans felt the eighth season truly concluded the show’s story, and it even included an episode called “My Finale” that felt like a proper ending. Although the show returned for a ninth season, it shifted focus to new characters, with the original leads appearing in smaller roles. While season nine had some enjoyable moments and interesting new faces, it didn’t deliver the satisfying conclusion many viewers had hoped for.
People on Reddit are having fun discussing season 9, with one user, LinesWithBig Andy, jokingly claiming to have no idea what others are talking about. Another user, enewwave, proposed a way to explain a potential season 9 without changing previous storylines: they suggested a scene where JD returns to Sacred Heart and questions why it looks the same, to which Turk replies that the original building was torn down and replaced with an exact replica. The Janitor then enters, remarking on the coincidence of JD’s return and a penny being placed in the door.
Markca suggests a possible storyline where JD wakes up from a dream to find Sacred Heart Hospital has been replaced by a medical school. This would mean Season 9 was all a dream or nightmare experienced by JD.
Fans on Reddit are also discussing whether Dr. Jan Itor, the Janitor, will appear in the show, with one user, Sagitta_luminus, saying, “It wouldn’t be Scrubs without him.” Another, D34THDE1TY, hopes he’ll be a surprise appearance later on. However, tmnttargetdiscount believes the character has already had his moment and retired.
The Scrubs revival will premiere on ABC on February 25th at 8 PM EST.
