Viewers have the power to influence what happens on their favorite shows. It’s no surprise that Dexter and Dexter: New Blood are getting another season – the show was quickly renewed, and writers immediately began brainstorming how to continue the story, which has many potential paths.
The mystery of The New York Ripper was partially resolved, but because fans are still fascinated and have their own ideas about who he is, the killer will be back in Season 2. Despite the strange name that was previously given, his true identity remains a focus.
Dexter: Resurrection Fans Willed This Killer Into Existence
The New York Ripper was the biggest mystery in Dexter: Resurrection, a killer so infamous they overshadowed even other dangerous characters. Throughout the season, viewers constantly guessed who it could be, and the show offered a reveal—though it wasn’t entirely conclusive. Due to the huge amount of fan interest, the show’s creator, Clyde Phillips, revealed in a podcast that the New York Ripper will return in a future season.
Phillips explained the writers were surprised by the strong fan interest in the character, noting they hadn’t originally planned to explore his story further. However, due to the positive response, they’ve decided to include him in the plot somehow, though the extent of his role is still unknown. It could be a brief scene showing his capture – fulfilling Detective Claudia’s long pursuit – or something more substantial.
Giving too much attention to this other character would pull focus from Dexter’s central goal: traveling the country and systematically eliminating the killers from the files he’d stolen. However, maybe this person, “Don Framt,” could remain a fugitive. It’s possible the identity is fake, and Dexter decides to pursue an even more dangerous criminal than Trinity. Tracking down and eliminating this new target would be a significant addition to Dexter’s history as a vigilante.
Fans are eager to find out more about the upcoming killer, whether he appears briefly or is a major villain all season. They’re especially interested in his background and who will portray him. A particularly exciting possibility is that this character could be connected to the existing Dexter storyline, perhaps even being a character fans already know – a twist that would delight long-time viewers.
What We Know About Dexter: Resurrection’s New York Ripper
Throughout the story, a shadowy figure remained a constant mystery. Detective Claudia has been relentlessly pursuing the New York Ripper for years – a horrific killer known for brutally mutilating his victims with a strange, unknown weapon. Eventually, Dexter assisted Claudia in realizing the weapon was likely a hook, possibly from a manhole cover.
Even though he hadn’t been active for years, he kept sending cruel messages to the families of those he’d harmed. During a college orientation, Claudia played one of these messages, deeply frightening the students and giving them a disturbing glimpse into the realities of being a homicide detective.
I was fascinated by Dexter’s world, and it was incredible to learn how he connected with so many different serial killers through Leon Prater’s group. But honestly, none of them really measured up in his eyes. Even the Gemini Killer – or, I guess, killers – didn’t impress him. Dexter completely saw through their intelligence after just one meeting, and then he skillfully provoked the brother into a dangerous confrontation. They just didn’t stand a chance against the Bay Harbor Butcher; Dexter was in a league of his own.
As a huge Dexter fan, I always found the New York Ripper fascinating. He was out there killing before Dexter even started, and the fact he was never caught is something Dexter would definitely notice. Honestly, since the Trinity killer, we hadn’t seen anyone operate on such a large scale. Dexter learned a tough lesson about letting anyone get close and trying to learn from them, but I think he’d be incredibly curious about this guy – a fellow killer who managed to stay a step ahead of everyone for so long.
The identity of the New York Ripper was partially known, as Dexter had left a file with the name Don Framt in Leon’s vault. However, this name seems suspicious, probably a fake. Some viewers have realized that “Don Framt” is an anagram for “DNA From T,” suggesting Leon might have used it as a code to protect his files if they were discovered. Given the Ripper’s skill, it makes sense he’d be careful about who he trusted, even Leon.
It’s simple for the writers to rework the New York Ripper’s story and turn him into a compelling character, instead of portraying him as an elderly, sick man who’s no longer a threat. Detectives Claudia and Melvin might pursue a promising lead, hoping to make an arrest, only to find the suspect is either nonexistent or a false trail. Perhaps even Leon didn’t know who the Ripper was and was actually trying to solve the mystery himself. There’s a lot of potential here, and I’m sure the writing team will develop a great story for this character.
Dexter: Resurrection Spawed Many New York Ripper Identity Theories
With a second season of Dexter: Resurrection probably not arriving until Fall 2026, it’s a good time to revisit some of the most popular fan theories about what might happen. People shared a lot of interesting and surprisingly logical ideas!
Leon Prater is out as a suspect since he’s deceased and the killer is still at large, according to Phillips. Blessing emerged as a possibility after admitting to Dexter that he had been a child soldier and had taken lives. While he seemed troubled by this past, it’s conceivable he has a hidden, darker side. However, given how much the audience likes Blessing as Dexter’s voice of reason, it seems improbable he’ll be revealed as the killer.
Vinny, the landlord, could be a suspect, though he’s clearly a terrible person. However, he doesn’t seem like a clever, calculated killer. Detective Melvin is a more surprising possibility, especially considering how pleased he seemed when giving Framt’s file to Claudia. Cooper, on the other hand, likely isn’t the killer. Leon believes Cooper died years ago, before turning fifty, and unless Leon was mistaken or lied to Dexter, that makes Cooper an unlikely suspect.
Fans were particularly interested in Jonah Mitchell after his character in Dexter revealed a disturbing side – he killed his mother in a fit of rage following his sister’s suicide. This led many to wonder if he, like his father, carried a predisposition for violence, even though he tried to control it. A hidden detail in Season 8 confirms Jonah was a patient of Dr. Vogel, a specialist who primarily treated killers. However, some believe he was still too young to fully match the psychological profile of a serial offender.
Despite the rumors, actor Brando Eaton, who played Jonah, playfully avoided addressing them in a Cameo video. He stated he couldn’t confirm or deny any connection to the ‘New York Ripper’ case, refusing to give a direct answer either way. That was all he would say on the subject.
The most likely explanation is that the killer is a completely new character. This person could be connected to someone we’ve already met – perhaps someone like Harrison’s girlfriend, Gigi, who might gain more attention in the story – or they could be entirely unknown. Whatever the reason, they clearly stopped committing murders, possibly due to getting older or being hurt. Despite this, they still enjoy tormenting the families of their victims and playing mind games with the police.
No matter who this new character is, viewers can expect to see them play a role in the story. Whether they end up as a victim of Dexter, imprisoned by Claudia, a minor character, or a major villain is still unknown. Perhaps Claudia will arrest them, leading to a trial where they’re ultimately released due to lack of evidence – a situation Dexter often enjoys and would consider a particularly challenging case. Regardless of their identity, this new threat won’t stand a chance against Dexter.
