DC Studios Unveils New Name for Robert Pattinson’s Batman Franchise

DC Studios has officially stated that Matt Reeves’ The Batman will have its own separate series of connected stories. The Batman came out in 2022, shortly before James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios and began a major overhaul of the DC superhero world. Now, as the new DC Universe (DCU) expands with shows like Superman and Creature Commandos, Matt Reeves’ The Batman saga is also growing.

Warner Bros. has officially stated that The Batman exists within its own separate cinematic universe. Recent materials about Superman: The Art and Making of the Film clarify that the DC films now include both The Batman and its related projects, such as the HBO series The Penguin.

Following the 2024 release of the TV series The Penguin – starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb and set after the events of The Batman – Warner Bros. has officially designated the films and series as a shared extended universe. This universe will continue to grow with The Batman: Part II in 2027, and there’s discussion about bringing The Penguin back for another season. Director Matt Reeves is also reportedly developing another spin-off series connected to The Batman, further expanding this corner of the DC universe.

According to the Superman art book, Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe—sometimes called the Batman Epic Crime Saga—is considered a separate story outside the main DC storyline, much like the Joker films. With James Gunn and Peter Safran now leading DC Studios, there’s been a lot of discussion about how these separate projects fit into the future of DC, and whether the new DC Universe vision will affect them.

From the beginning, the CEOs stated that they would still create Elseworlds projects – films separate from the main DC universe. As explained in the Superman artbook, this approach – balancing stories within the established universe and standalone tales – was intended to replicate the way DC Comics fans have always enjoyed both core storylines and unique, individual comics.

This confirms that DC Studios is now creating two separate universes for its superheroes. The main DC Universe (DCU) will feature characters like Superman and Peacemaker, and will grow to include Supergirl and Clayface in 2026. Alongside this, a separate universe based on The Batman, known as the Elseworlds continuity, will also be developed.

DC Has Duelling Batman Universes

From the start, The Batman was created as its own separate story, outside of the main DC Universe. However, many fans were hoping DC Studios might decide to include Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the DC Universe after all.

Fans are eager to see the DC Universe establish its own Batman, but plans for the announced movie, The Brave and the Bold, are still in the early stages, and a new actor to play the role hasn’t been chosen yet.

As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited to see how they’re building out the Batman corner of the DCU, especially with the upcoming Clayface movie in 2026 – it’s awesome they’re tackling one of Batman’s classic foes. There was a buzz online when people spotted a logo related to Robert Pattinson’s Batman on the Clayface set, leading to speculation about a possible crossover or merging of the different Batman universes. But so far, DC Studios hasn’t officially said anything about it, so it’s all just rumors for now.

It’s still unclear how DC Studios will handle different versions of Batman, but currently, Matt Reeves’s ‘The Batman’ continues as its own separate story, even as James Gunn and Peter Safran build out the main DC Universe.

The Batman, a thrilling crime story starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, and Colin Farrell, premiered in March 2022. A sequel, The Batman – Part 2, will continue Bruce Wayne’s story and is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027.
