Doctor Who fans will be eagerly watching the new spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, when it premieres on the BBC next week, looking for connections to the larger Doctor Who universe and any returning characters.
This story takes place on Earth and centers around a brewing war between humans and the Sea Devils, who are returning to cause trouble. With the Doctor unavailable, the global organization UNIT must take the lead in defending the planet.
The new series brings back many familiar faces, including Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley as their UNIT characters. Colin McFarlane also returns as General Austin Pierce, a character from the ‘Torchwood: Children of Earth’ story.
Now that the Sea Devils are back – they last appeared in a 2022 special with Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor – fans will finally learn more about these powerful and enigmatic creatures.
Writer Pete McTighe hinted that the show includes hidden references to the broader Doctor Who story, saying viewers who pay close attention and pause the show will find lots of details.

Davies explains that the exciting thing about the Sea Devils is how little we previously knew about them. Before now, they were mostly just seen as monsters appearing on a beach near Portsmouth or at the Sea Base. This new approach allows for a much deeper exploration of their culture and how they live.
Doctor Who fans are finally going to see the Doctor’s home world! According to reports, the show will dedicate an entire episode – episode 3 – to exploring this location, which is described as amazing.
It’s been really enjoyable to build out the story’s history by showing how the characters live, their surroundings, and all the different creatures around them.
First appearing in 1972 with the Third Doctor in “The Sea Devils,” this species has changed a lot over the years. They’ve lived in Earth’s oceans for millions of years, but when they wake up to find the seas polluted by humans, they decide to do something about it.
