OSRS: Sea Charting Guide

Completing all the Sea Charting tasks in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is famously difficult.

The game features 358 Sea Charting tasks scattered throughout the oceans. Finishing them all will give you a huge amount of Sailing XP, but it will take a significant amount of time unless you get some assistance.

In this guide, we’ll give you some tips and tools to help make this all much more bearable.

Pre-Requisites

Okay, so before you even start, there are a couple of things you’ll want to have ready. Trust me, getting these sorted out beforehand will really help you move through the charting process faster – and you’ll need it, because it can take around 10 hours to finish everything!

These are the must-have prerequisites if you wish to 100% sea charting:

  • Level 78 Sailing
  • Innoculation Station – Boat Facility crafting unlocked at Level 40 Sailing.
  • Eternal Brazier – Unlocked at Level 78 Sailing. Open the lockbox at Buccaneer’s Haven with the key from Tear of the Soul.
  • Crowbar – From the “Prying Times” quest.
  • Current Duck – From the “Current Affairs” quest.
  • Fishbowl Helmet and Diving Apparatus – From the “Freeing Pirate Pete” subquest during the “Recipe for Disaster” main quest.

Once you’ve met all the requirements, you’ll be able to explore everything! We suggest making sure you have everything ready before trying to fully complete the game.

Plugins and External Tools

To make creating sea charts much faster and simpler, we suggest using a few external tools. We highly recommend the Sailing plugin for the RuneLite client as a starting point.

To install the Sailing plugin, first click the wrench icon in the top right corner of your screen. Then, click the plugin icon and search for “Sailing”. You can install it directly within the game.

This plugin includes a special ‘Sea Charting’ feature. It points out any unexplored areas or items close by, so you can find them more easily.

This update will also simplify certain charts. For instance, you’ll be able to automatically find solutions to puzzles provided by Mermaid Guides.

We also suggest installing the Watchdog plugin for your Crystal Extractor. If you harvest the extractor while you’re charting the sea, you can earn a significant amount of extra XP – around 36,000 per hour.

We also strongly suggest checking the Sailing map on the official Old School RuneScape wiki. It clearly displays the locations for all 358 Sea Charting tasks.

And get this – I can actually enter my in-game name! It then keeps track of which achievements I’ve unlocked and shows them with a nice green highlight. Seriously, it makes everything so much easier to follow.

With that said, let’s now talk about how to complete every different Sea Charting task type.

How to Complete Each Sea Charting Task Type

Generic

Okay, so this charting thing is super easy. Basically, I just need to find these spots marked with the Captain’s Log on the map and click them. That’s it! It’s honestly the most straightforward task in the game so far.

Spyglass

This task is much like the general charting ones. Simply travel to the locations marked with a spyglass icon on your map and use your spyglass item there. This will reveal a view of the surrounding area and finish the task.

Crate

Tasks with the Crowbar icon are special. Use the Crowbar on them to reveal a potion you can use.

We strongly advise against drinking these potions if you’re not ready for what might happen! They can cause a variety of side effects, including damage to yourself or even temporarily losing your ship as you’re teleported elsewhere.

Current Duck

Tasks with a duck icon require you to use the Current Duck tool. When you’re near one of these tasks, select the tool from your inventory and follow its guidance until it reaches the end.

You can now see where the Current Duck is headed on your map, which will help you plan ahead. Just remember, the duck itself still needs to travel there – it’s a bit slow, so feel free to take a short break while it makes its way!

Diving

Tasks with a Diving Helmet icon require you to chat with a Mermaid Guide and figure out their riddle.

As we previously discussed, the RuneLite Sailing plugin will immediately solve the riddle for you. If you prefer, you can also simply search for the mermaid’s name to find the answer. It’s that easy!

Weather

To complete this task, find a Meaty Aura Logist troll at sea and offer to gather data for them. You can identify them by the Portable Weather Station icon displayed above.

So, these troll guys gave me a Portable Weather Station, and they want me to take a reading at a certain location. Luckily, because I have the Sailing plugin, the exact spot is marked right on my map – super helpful!

Simply go to the indicated location and operate the weather station. After that, return to the Meaty Aura Logist and share the collected weather data to complete the task.

That’s everything you need to know to chart the sea efficiently in Old School RuneScape! Remember to take breaks, as completing all the tasks will take several hours due to the sheer number of them.
