Movie props frequently sell for large sums of money, whether directly or through auctions, as fans and collectors love owning pieces of their favorite films. A recent auction of items from the world of Jim Henson – including props from the Muppets and The Dark Crystal, as well as personal belongings – was particularly successful, bringing in an impressive $2.6 million.
A recent auction, held by The Jim Henson Company and Julien’s Auctions, offered fans a rare chance to own over 400 original puppets and props from Jim Henson’s iconic creations. Many of these items were being made available to the public for the very first time, spanning Henson’s entire career. Highlights included Uncle Traveling Matt and Gillis Fraggle from Fraggle Rock, both selling for $64,000, and Miss Piggy’s heels from The Great Muppet Caper for $22,400. The most valuable item was the full-size Crystal of Truth from Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, which sold for $70,000. Other items up for auction included early prints by Henson and a pocket watch from Labyrinth.
An Unprecedented Auction That Has Some Questioning If The Pieces Actually Belong in a Museum
As a huge fan, I was really surprised to hear about this auction! It’s not every day you see items coming directly from the Jim Henson Company’s own archives – they’re doing this to celebrate their 70th anniversary, which is amazing. Honestly, it’s the first time they’ve ever done anything like this, and it’s got a lot of us wondering if selling these things off is the best idea. Some of these items really feel like they belong in a museum, you know? We’re talking about one-of-a-kind pieces, like the map from Muppet Treasure Island and puppets Jim Henson personally made for his work on Saturday Night Live! But Lisa Henson, Jim’s daughter and the company’s CEO, recently told The New York Times that they do work with museums, and they see the auction as a way to connect directly with fans like me. It’s a tricky situation, but I get where they’re coming from.
According to Henson, the auction started as a celebration of our 70th anniversary. We wanted to create opportunities for our fans to engage with the company.
Although the auction held on November 25th included many important pieces, The Jim Henson Company still has thousands of items in its collection and archives. This means there’s a wealth of material that will keep Henson’s creative spirit alive and continue to inspire people for generations.
