Benedict Cumberbatch is still hoping to star in a modern adaptation of the classic 1939 adventure novel that partially inspired the creation of James Bond.
The film Rogue Male was initially announced in 2016, but there haven’t been many updates since. Benedict Cumberbatch recently confirmed the movie is still planned and will start filming soon.
The Doctor Strange actor said they don’t have a filming date yet, but they’re aiming to start next year (according to Smartless). He confidently added that the project will definitely happen.
Scheduling filming for Rogue Male remains difficult due to Cumberbatch’s other major projects, which he jokingly describes as involving “cloaks floating about”—a clear allusion to his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Benedict Cumberbatch hinted in January 2025 that he’ll likely reprise his role as Doctor Strange in the next Avengers film, tentatively titled Doomsday, but he seemed uncertain. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, he avoided directly answering questions about his future with Marvel, explaining that any response would likely be misinterpreted, cause unwanted attention, and follow him around indefinitely.
Benedict Cumberbatch is set to star in Rogue Male as a skilled English marksman vacationing in 1930s Europe. His unusual hobby? Trying to get a clear shot at the continent’s most dangerous leader with his sniper rifle.
The man manages to get a clear shot at the dictator, but is then captured, tortured, and left for dead. What follows is a thrilling chase, reminiscent of the classic film The Fugitive with Harrison Ford, as Cumberbatch explains. The story also draws inspiration from the novel that originally inspired the creator of James Bond.
Cumberbatch explained that the book is the first of its kind in the fugitive genre and greatly influenced Ian Fleming when he created James Bond.
The author describes Rogue Male as more than just a classic adventure story, noting that its themes surprisingly resonate with current global political issues. They explain, “It’s fascinating how it plays into the political spectrum of what’s going on in the world right now.”
Originally a 1939 novel by Geoffrey Household, this story was first brought to the screen by director Fritz Lang in the 1941 film Man Hunt. A later version was made for BBC television starring Peter O’Toole.
Michael Lesslie, who wrote the screenplay for the Assassin’s Creed movie, was working on the script for Rogue Male back in 2016. Currently, Benedict Cumberbatch is starring in The Thing With Feathers in the U.K. and Ireland. His dark comedy, The Roses, was recently released on Hulu and is scheduled for wider release in 2025.
