Netflix has another hit on its hands! The new series, based on novels by Imamura Shogo, is currently at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Packed with action, violence, and a compelling story, it’s quickly become a top 10 show on the streaming platform and is receiving rave reviews.
I just finished watching Last Samurai Standing, and wow, it’s intense! It follows Shujiro Saga, brilliantly played by Junichi Okada, as he enters a brutal battle royale with 291 other samurai in Kyoto. He’s risking everything to win – the prize money is the only hope for his wife and child who are battling cholera. We’re talking a massive ¥100 billion prize! The samurai have to race to Tokyo, collecting tags from each person they defeat, until only one is left standing. People are calling it Squid Game meets samurai, and honestly, that’s a pretty good comparison. What really grabbed me, though, was how the show slowly reveals the backstories of the main characters over the six episodes. It’s a slow burn, but it’s completely captivating and kept me on the edge of my seat.
It’s Lauded As A Live-Action Anime
According to Patrick St. Michel of The Japan Times, the series Last Samurai Standing doesn’t simply copy anime; it’s inspired by its unique style, forging its own path despite some familiar elements. This is especially noteworthy given how often live-action anime adaptations disappoint. While the show builds on the success of series like Shogun and Blue Eyed Samurai, and even borrows a bit from Battle Royale, it truly stands apart by taking cues from animation to enhance its action and storytelling. Melissa Camacho of Common Sense Media notes that fans of historical Japanese action will likely enjoy it, but even those less familiar with the genre might find the story compelling if they can handle the show’s violence.
This show is truly captivating, with beautiful visuals. The action sequences are incredibly well-done, bringing to mind popular anime like Samurai Champloo and Demon Slayer. You won’t want to miss it! Good news: Last Samurai Standing is coming back for a second season. However, it will be a while before new episodes arrive, giving you plenty of time to watch and re-watch the first season.
