There are some changes happening with Ahsoka Season 2, including the recasting of two villains. Sadly, Ray Stevenson, who played Baylan Skoll and passed away in May 2023, won’t be returning. Rory McCann has been cast to take over the role. Now, it’s been revealed that another villain from Season 1 won’t be back, but this time it’s due to budget constraints – Disney couldn’t reach an agreement with the actor.
Claudia Black, known for playing Great Mother Klothow in Star Wars: Ahsoka, revealed she won’t be returning for the show’s second season due to a financial disagreement with Disney. In an interview with Bleeding Cool, Black explained that Disney couldn’t meet her salary requirements as a single mother with responsibilities in Los Angeles, especially since the second season was being filmed in London. Ultimately, she had to decline the role.
Black shared her enthusiasm for the Star Wars franchise, explaining that the role was particularly meaningful because her son became a fan through The Clone Wars. She even emailed Dave Filoni to express her gratitude for being cast in Season 1. While she was disappointed she couldn’t continue with the show, she explained that she had to prioritize her family’s financial needs. She pointed out the realities of the entertainment industry, saying, “It’s really more business than show – about 90 percent business and 10 percent show.” Unfortunately, she said the production wasn’t able to accommodate her as a single mother, which she understood given the current economic climate and the challenges of funding projects.
Watching Ahsoka Season 1, I was really surprised to see Claudia Black return as the Great Mother Klothow, bringing Grand Admiral Thrawn back with her to Dathomir. It looked like she was going to take over as the new leader of the Nightsisters. Their plan was to use Dathomir as a base and load crates they found in the catacombs onto the Eye of Sion. But it sounded like those crates weren’t filled with supplies – they held bodies that the Great Mothers intended to bring back to life as part of something bigger. It definitely felt like Black’s character was going to be a major player if Ahsoka had gotten a second season.
What This Means For Ahsoka Season 2

Claudia Black played a significant role in the first season of Ahsoka, so her departure leaves questions about the show’s direction in Season 2. While other Nightsisters, notably Morgan Elsbeth played by Diana Lee Inosanto, were featured – and ultimately overthrown with help from Ahsoka and the Mandalorian – Morgan’s death means the Nightsisters’ future is uncertain. Instead of recasting the powerful figure of Great Mother Klothow, the series may introduce a new character to fill that role.
Great Mother Klothow was last seen with Grand Admiral Thrawn heading back to their home world, Dathomir. She was poised to become the leader of the Nightsisters and was a trusted advisor to Thrawn, suggesting she’s too significant a character to simply vanish. The majority of the original cast will be returning for the next season, including Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, David Tennant as Huyang, and Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Claudia Black is experiencing a career resurgence. Although she declined to return for season two of Ahsoka due to salary concerns, she’s landed a new role in a Spartacus sequel series, Spartacus: House of Ashur, for Starz. The show will reunite her with creator Steven S. DeKnight and co-star Nick E. Tarabay, who will reprise his role as Spartacus. Black will play a character named Cossutia, and it appears Starz was able to meet her financial expectations in a way Disney couldn’t.
