7 Most Powerful Marvel Characters Killed By The X-Men

The X-Men face a uniquely difficult challenge. They’re not simply heroes, educators, or rescuers; they are all of those things, plus the primary protectors of an entire group of people – mutants. This means defending a world that often fears and despises them, all while safeguarding their own kind. Though they’ve generally avoided killing, the X-Men have sometimes been forced to eliminate enemies who were too dangerous to leave alive, taking decisive and often brutal action when necessary.

The X-Men are known as a strong force for good, consistently battling formidable enemies. Sadly, they’ve sometimes had to take lives, and those they’ve defeated often rank among the most dangerous villains in the Marvel Universe. Here are seven powerful Marvel characters who were killed by the X-Men, who used their abilities and teamwork to find ways to overcome them.

7) Scarlet Witch

Scarlet Witch is poised to become the Sorcerer Supreme, but she’s already been one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes. With a long history tied to the X-Men, she was long believed to be Magneto’s daughter. She once stripped powers from almost all mutants and later sacrificed herself to improve the resurrection process for the mutant nation of Krakoa. Recently, in the “Sins of Sinister” storyline, corrupted versions of the Krakoan mutants, altered by the resurrection process, targeted Wanda as a threat and destroyed her with a powerful energy blast as part of their plan for world domination.

6) Nimrod

As a huge X-Men fan, Nimrod is seriously one of the scariest villains they’ve ever faced. The first one showed up out of nowhere, basically from the future, and was built to take down anyone with powers – it had a counter for everything. It wasn’t even destroyed, it ended up merging with Master Mold to become this even bigger threat, Bastion! But then, during the Krakoa era, Orchis built another Nimrod, and this one was brutal. It absolutely devastated the X-Men, wiping out most of a whole team. Thankfully, Storm and Magneto eventually teamed up and managed to take it down, but honestly, Nimrod is a machine that always keeps me on the edge of my seat whenever it appears in the comics.

5) Horde

Horde was a tremendously powerful alien who fought the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men Annual #11. This brutal extraterrestrial easily defeated the team, inflicting heavy casualties. Their only chance lay in a unique crystal that gave whoever held it nearly limitless power. Wolverine managed to obtain the crystal, but even with it, Horde killed him. Fortunately, because of the crystal’s power, Wolverine was able to regenerate from even a single drop of blood, revive his fallen teammates, and ultimately defeat the alien.

4) Thanos

Many fans consider Thanos to be Marvel’s most formidable villain, and with good reason – he’s defeated nearly every powerful being in the universe, inspiring fear in everyone from superheroes to ordinary citizens. While incredibly difficult to kill, the X-Men actually have managed it. During the “Sins of Sinister” storyline, Juggernaut was given the ability to shrink in size thanks to the mutant Micromax. He was then launched through a portal and struck Thanos, instantly killing him – even Thanos’s famously durable head couldn’t withstand the impact. Apparently, nothing can stop the Juggernaut!

3) Selene

Selene is a very old and powerful mutant who survives by draining the life force of others – humans, mutants, and even magical creatures. For centuries, she’s operated from the shadows, building her strength and influence. She’s been involved with groups like the Hellfire Club, once serving as the Black Queen, and has frequently clashed with the X-Men. After becoming a resident of Krakoa, she aided Apocalypse in creating a powerful gateway and worked with X-Corp. She attempted to join the ruling Quiet Council by taking Magneto’s place, but her plan to use the gateway – which she turned into a monstrous creature – as leverage failed. Though she initially escaped, the X-Men tracked her down, and Hope Summers defeated her. She was later brought back to life by Sebastian Shaw and finally secured a position on the Council, ultimately partnering with him in a secret alliance with Orchis.

2) Apocalypse

Apocalypse is a major enemy of the X-Men and has been defeated in battle multiple times. One of his first significant defeats occurred in the comic X-Factor (a team closely associated with the X-Men). He kidnapped Nathan Summers and infected him with a dangerous techno-organic virus, prompting X-Factor to intervene and attempt a rescue. During this confrontation, Cyclops unleashed a powerful optic blast that killed Apocalypse. However, he was later revived through a special process. Years later, during the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline, Magneto managed to destroy him completely in X-Men: Omega #1.

1) Onslaught

I’ve always been fascinated by the story of Onslaught. He’s seriously one of the X-Men’s biggest threats, and his origin is so twisted! It started when Professor X tried to erase Magneto’s memories – all the darkness within Magneto ended up inside Charles Xavier, and that’s how Onslaught was born. He just kept getting stronger and eventually revealed himself by completely overpowering the X-Men. He took over a massive Sentinel army with the help of Dark Beast and Havok, and then launched a full-scale attack on New York City. Things got even worse when he captured X-Man and Franklin Richards, which boosted his power to insane levels. The X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four all teamed up to fight him in Central Park, but he was incredibly powerful. Even after the Hulk destroyed his physical body, Onslaught didn’t stay down! He transformed into pure energy. The heroes bravely jumped into the energy field, giving the X-Men a way to focus their attacks, though it couldn’t actually harm Onslaught’s energy form, only the other heroes! In the end, the mutants managed to destroy him, but it was Franklin Richards who really saved the day, pulling everyone into a new universe he created to keep them from being killed. It was a truly epic battle.
