Over the years, Spider-Man comics have featured a wide variety of costumes, and some have been quite unusual. While he’s most known for his classic red and blue suit with web patterns, Spider-Man has often been forced to wear something different. Sometimes he’s chosen to change, like when he wore the all-black suit, and other times he’s been given new costumes by others – for example, the white Future Foundation suit or those designed by Norman Osborn.
Spider-Man has sported some truly strange outfits over the years, from costumes he was made to wear to designs he tried on himself. Here’s a rundown of some of the most unusual looks from Marvel Comics.
5) Captain Universe Suit

In Marvel Comics, Captain Universe is a powerful force that chooses people facing extreme danger and grants them incredible abilities. It essentially allows anyone to become a hero by merging with them and giving them the powers, memories, and look of Captain Universe. For example, this happened to Spider-Man, resulting in a strange new costume that blended his usual outfit with Captain Universe’s design.
The story began in Spectacular Spider-Man #158 when Spider-Man connected with the power of Captain Universe. This connection continued throughout all of his comics at the time as part of the Acts of Vengeance storyline. Along with a new costume featuring a cosmic design on his mask, Peter Parker gained improved senses, strength, speed, the ability to fly, and limited telekinesis. Later, during the Second Totem War, Miles Morales also received a version of the Captain Universe costume.
4) Threats and Menaces Suit

Norah Winters created the Threats and Menaces suit for Spider-Man to boost his abilities during fights. She designed it after the events involving Kindred, when J. Jonah Jameson was trying to redeem himself by assisting Peter as his strategist. While well-intentioned, the suit just didn’t seem to fit Spider-Man’s style.
The suit was popular because it had a camera that filmed everything from Peter’s point of view, and Norah streamed it on her TMN network. However, Peter soon grew tired of constantly being filmed while fighting, so he stopped wearing the suit, left TMN, and went back to his original costume.
3) All-New, All-Daring Spider-Armor

In Web of Spider-Man #100, Spider-Man debuted a completely new look – the Spider-Man Mk 1 armor. He faced off against Blood Rose, the son of Kingpin, and a large group of his enemies, including Dragon Man, Super-Adaptoid, Dreadnaught, Vanisher, Eel, Blitz, and others. To defeat them, Spider-Man needed more than just his usual costume and abilities.
Spider-Man’s first armored suit looked metallic, but it actually became less effective over time, eventually breaking apart. This was probably for the best, as Spider-Man relies on being quick and flexible, and the heavy suit hindered his abilities – it just wasn’t a good fit for his fighting style and felt outdated.
2) Thor Spider-Man Suit

On Earth-20051, the Enchantress magically changed Spider-Man’s appearance to look like Thor. Unfortunately, the result was a rather comical costume. Instead of a powerful, Thor-like look, Spider-Man ended up resembling a child playing dress-up for Halloween. The helmet didn’t fit well, and the large clasps holding the cape looked awkward.
This event occurred in the Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man comic series, meaning it’s not considered part of the main Marvel Universe storyline. In the core Marvel Universe (known as Earth-616), Spider-Man has never been considered worthy enough to lift the hammer Mjolnir. However, this is definitely one of the strangest Spider-Man costumes ever created, and hopefully, we won’t see it again.
1) Bombastic Bag-Man

The Bombastic Bag-Man suit is famously considered one of Spider-Man’s most embarrassing outfits. It appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #258. He had to wear it after the Fantastic Four assisted him in removing the alien symbiote costume he acquired during the original Secret Wars. Without the symbiote, he needed something to wear while traveling home.
Someone created a makeshift costume for Spider-Man using a Fantastic Four suit and a paper bag with eye holes. Johnny Storm playfully made things worse by sticking a “Kick Me” sign on the costume after patting Spider-Man on the back. Marvel jokingly brought the embarrassing outfit back in Spectacular Spider-Man #256, where Spider-Man was dubbed “The Bombastic Bag-Man.” Later, Black Cat teased Spider-Man by making him wear the costume again in Amazing Spider-Man (Vol 5) #87.
