Hulu Just Added an ‘80s Fantasy Cult Classic (And We’re Happy It Doesn’t Have a Sequel)

Hollywood loves making sequels, but we’re glad this beloved fantasy film from the 1980s has been left alone. The ’80s produced so many classic movies, and many of them – like Beetlejuice and Top Gun: Maverick – have recently been revisited with new installments. This particular film, a truly magical fantasy adventure, has remained untouched since its original release, and that’s a good thing.

With a remarkable 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Princess Bride remains a beloved classic that holds up to multiple viewings. Directed by Rob Reiner and based on William Goldman’s novel, the film began streaming on Hulu on November 1st. It tells the story of a grandfather reading a thrilling tale to his ill grandson – a story about a farmhand who becomes a pirate and goes on an epic journey to reunite with his true love.

The Princess Bride Is an ‘80s Classic That Doesn’t Need a Sequel

The Princess Bride is a rare movie that has managed to maintain its appeal across generations to become one of the greatest family movies of all time and an ‘80s classic. The film cleverly blends romance, adventure, and comedy into a heartfelt story that satirizes fairytale tropes with a timeless appeal. The clever and witty script doesn’t miss a beat and not only introduces audiences to iconic characters like the hero Westley and the villain Prince Humperdinck, but also features endlessly quotable lines like, “Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something,” and “As you wish.”

It’s remarkable that The Princess Bride hasn’t been rebooted or remade like so many other films, and that’s a good thing. The original is a timeless classic, and a sequel would likely fall far short of its quality, potentially ruining what makes the first film so special. It’s simply a movie that doesn’t need to be messed with, and fortunately, the director and cast seem to agree.

Reiner has publicly said he’s against making a sequel. He told Entertainment Weekly that he wouldn’t do one without the approval of the late William Goldman, who considered the original his best work. Wright has also confirmed that a sequel is not going to happen.

What’s New on Hulu?

Hulu added a bunch of popular movies to its streaming service in November, including The Princess Bride, 13 Going On 30, Miracle On 34th Street, and The Sound Of Music. Even more titles are coming on December 1st, like Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, Home Alone, Straight Outta Compton, The Santa Clause, and many others.
