In the open-world RPG Where Winds Meet, learning different martial arts dramatically changes how you play – from combat and exploration to character development. A key feature is the ability to equip and master two weapons simultaneously, allowing for diverse and rewarding character builds. Unlocking all the weapon skills is a major highlight, as each style feels distinct and alters your combat approach, letting you customize your role – whether you prefer to be a durable tank, a high-damage dealer, a healer, or a ranged attacker. This guide will show you how to unlock all weapon martial arts in Where Winds Meet.
How to Unlock Weapon Martial Arts in Where Winds Meet
In Where Winds Meet, you’ll automatically learn certain martial arts, but to get most of them, you’ll need to either find and defeat secret masters to steal their techniques or become a member of a specific Sect.
Performing Skill Theft
Learning most weapon-based martial arts requires completing stealth missions called Skill Theft. Before you can do that, you’ll need to unlock two special abilities: Touch of Death and Veil of Stillness. Also, keep in mind that some important areas, called Sanctums, are locked and require Dragon Keys to enter.
Learning a new fighting style through Skill Theft is straightforward. You need to enter a martial arts training area, avoid the guards, watch the master’s technique, and press the action button when a golden ring appears. If you successfully fill the progress bar, you’ll gain that style.
Joining a Sect
Each weapon is associated with a specific group, and joining that group instantly teaches you their unique fighting style. You’re free to leave a group whenever you want, but first you’ll have to make it through a dangerous escape challenge called the Perception Forest. Once you’ve left, you can always join a different group.
Once you submit your first Oddity, Qi Sheng will allow you to select one of these martial arts: the Panacea Fan, Thundercry Blade, Infernal Twinblades, or Vernal Umbrella.
How to Unlock All Weapon Martial Arts in Where Winds Meet
As of right now, Where Winds Meet features twelve different weapon skills, and each one is unlocked in a unique way.
Nameless Sword
The Nameless Sword is the basic sword fighting style you begin with in the game. You automatically unlock it at the start – no special actions needed! It’s a quick and fluid style emphasizing fast attacks and movement, and you already know how to use it when you start playing.
Nameless Spear
Similar to the Nameless Sword, the Nameless Spear is a fighting style you’ll learn quickly. It emphasizes quick, flowing movements and accurate strikes, making it ideal for dealing fast damage and dodging enemy attacks.
The Nameless Sword and Nameless Spear combo act as the baseline for all your early encounters.
Panacea Fan
Panacea Fan is a fantastic healing style to use when you’re first starting out, and it’s especially helpful when playing with others. It allows you to quickly heal teammates nearby, recover your own health, and generally makes tough early-game fights much easier to survive.
There are two ways to unlock it:
- Choose it from Qi Sheng after submitting your first Oddity. This is highly recommended, because health items are limited early on.
- Join the Silver Needle Sect, which also teaches this martial art.
Thundercry Blade
Thundercry Blade is a powerful sword style for players who prefer dealing big damage and having solid defense. It lets you create a shield based on your health, pull enemies in, and then hit them with a large area-of-effect attack.
You can get it in three ways:
- Choose it from Qi Sheng early on.
- Infiltrate the Well of Heaven Martial Camp in Moonveil Mountains (part of Kaifeng progression).
- Join the Well of Heaven Sect to unlock it instantly.
Infernal Twinblades
Infernal Twinblades are ideal for players who enjoy a quick and energetic fighting style. As you attack, a special meter fills up, significantly increasing your chance to deal massive critical damage.
There are three ways to unlock it:
- Choose it from Qi Sheng when submitting your first Oddity.
- Steal it from the Midnight Mercy Sanctum in Qinghe.
- Join the Midnight Blades Sect, which teaches it automatically.
Stormbreaker Spear
The Stormbreaker Spear is a fantastic weapon to unlock early in the game. It’s designed to draw enemy attention, withstand a lot of damage, and manage groups of opponents effectively. Essentially, it allows you to act as a durable frontline fighter.
There are two ways to get it:
- If you prefer the stealth method, infiltrate the Silver Needle Sanctum and observe the master there.
- Join the Raging Tides Sect as this automatically unlocks the Stormbreaker Spear.
Strategic Sword
The Strategic Sword focuses more on tactical combat and causing damage over time, unlike the Nameless Sword. You can most easily obtain it by using the Skill Theft ability.
Your mission is to enter the Lone Cloud Sanctum, located close to Encircling Lake in southern Qinghe. Once inside, carefully watch the master’s technique and press the designated key when a gold ring appears. Successfully observing the complete technique will unlock the martial art. Alternatively, you can instantly learn it by joining the Lone Cloud Sect.
Heavenquaker Spear
This spear fighting style is fast-paced and impressive to watch. It features wide-sweeping attacks and causes bleeding damage. You can unlock the Heavenquaker Spear by entering the Raging Tides Sanctum. Inside, you’ll find a master who uses powerful, long-range spear combinations – you need to study their moves to learn the technique yourself.
If you don’t want to sneak in, you can learn the technique right away by joining the Raging Tides Sect – they’re experts in spear fighting.
Soulshade Umbrella
The Soulshade Umbrella is a stylish support weapon that automatically heals your teammates. It creates healing turrets and sends out guided healing projectiles, making it especially helpful when playing with others or tackling difficult challenges later in the game.
You can unlock this by traveling to a small village west of Mistveil Forest in Kaifeng. Look for a building with an open entrance and go upstairs. You’ll find a path that leads down to a hidden ladder where an umbrella master is waiting, ready to teach you Skill Theft. Alternatively, you can unlock it by joining the Hollow Vale Sect.
Vernal Umbrella
The Vernal Umbrella is a unique weapon that lets you attack from a distance. It can freeze enemies, deploy a helpful turret, and allows for quick weapon switching to create powerful attack combinations. It’s a visually impressive fighting style focused on controlling groups of enemies.
If you miss recruiting this character early in the game, you can still find them at the Temporal Pavilion or Time Tower in Kaifeng. Unlike other recruits, you won’t be able to sneak in – you’ll need to finish a short investigation first.
Okay, so to get to the martial art, I need to hunt down five clues. They’re scattered around and I have to talk to some pretty interesting characters – a cat, two pairs of women, and a guard at a warehouse. If I put the clues together right, I’ll get the key to the warehouse, which leads to a banquet room where the martial art is hidden. Or, if I’m feeling different, I can just join the Velvet Shade Sect and skip all that! It seems like there are multiple ways to get there.
Inkwell Fan
The Inkwell Fan is a combat style focused on dealing damage from a distance, using wind attacks to lift and control enemies. It works especially well with umbrella fighting, as both rely on keeping opponents at bay.
You can get this item by sneaking into the Inkwell Fan Sanctum, which is found in the northern Floral Expanse Beyond. The area seems calm initially, but you’ll need to be stealthy once you’re inside. Or, you can simply join the Silver Needle Sect to unlock it right away.
Mortal Rope Dart
The Mortal Rope Dart is a versatile weapon that allows you to draw enemies closer, quickly move towards bosses, and even call upon rats with a unique ability.
To get it, you need to sneak into the Nine Mortal Ways Martial Hall in Kaifeng City. A guard is blocking the entrance, but an old man shows you how to get in using disguises. You can learn to make these disguises by helping Wuyan at Lin’s Cosmetics with her request. Once you’re inside, your goal is to steal the knowledge of the rope dart fighting style.
You can also unlock it by joining the Nine Mortal Ways Sect.
