MAPPA’s 2016 anime, Yuri!!! on Ice, was a huge success and helped launch the studio to prominence. While the series concluded in December 2017, fans have been hoping for a continuation ever since. For years, MAPPA teased a prequel film focusing on Victor’s skating career, even releasing a short preview. However, in April of last year, those hopes were dashed when MAPPA officially cancelled the project. This decision caused significant backlash from fans, many of whom were upset after waiting nearly eight years for an update.
Although a second season hasn’t been announced, all 12 episodes of the anime are currently available to watch for free on YouTube. This offer is a celebration of the series finale and will last until December 21st. However, this free viewing is limited to viewers in Japan. Fans outside of Japan will need to use official streaming services. The news, first shared on X (formerly Twitter) by @comic_natalie, quickly became popular, with many fans sharing their enthusiasm for the show. Even after its cancellation, the series continues to grow in popularity, and Junichi Suwabe, the voice actor for Victor Nikiforov, also shared the news on his official X account, receiving a lot of attention.
What Does This Update Mean For Yuri!! on Ice’s Future?
I’m still holding out hope for a return, even with all the recent promos and deals! It’s just frustrating because MAPPA didn’t hint at anything when they announced the cancellation. What makes it even tougher is that this anime is completely original, so we can’t turn to a manga or light novel to find out what happens next. The ending was good, don’t get me wrong, but there was so much potential for more stories – a prequel would have been amazing!
Victor’s rise to become a five-time gold medalist by age 27 was truly remarkable, captivating audiences worldwide and reaching a level of success few achieve in his sport. While the story mainly followed Yuri’s development, Victor primarily served as his coach, idol, and partner, a role that felt somewhat underdeveloped. A film focused on Victor would have been a great way to delve deeper into his character and explore his perspective, giving fans a more complete understanding of who he is.
The anime’s ending suggests Victor might return to competitive skating, as we see him performing alongside Yuri. They had agreed Victor would coach Yuri until he won five gold medals, but the series concluded after Yuri earned a silver. It seemed like their partnership was meant to last longer, but the story ended sooner than expected. While the free episodes aren’t available on YouTube worldwide, you can currently watch the full anime on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
