Following Daniel Radcliffe’s disclosure that he wrote a letter to Dominic McLaughlin, the actor starring in the new Harry Potter TV show, McLaughlin has now shared his response to receiving it.
During a recent appearance on the show Saturday Mash-Up! Live, actor McLaughlin – who has been cast as Harry in the upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books – was asked about a letter he received from Daniel Radcliffe.
He told me he received a letter directly from Daniel Radcliffe, which he thought was incredible. He was traveling back to Glasgow by train with his dad, who unexpectedly handed him the letter during the journey.
I finished reading and saw the initials ‘Dan R.’ at the end. It was really frustrating, but I tried to stay calm because I was on the train.

Last month on Good Morning America, Daniel Radcliffe shared that he’d written a letter to Dominic, who responded with a kind note.
I don’t want to linger in my children’s lives, but I really wanted to send a message wishing him well. I wanted to tell him I hope he has an amazing time, even better than the wonderful time I had.
When I see pictures of him and his friends, it just makes me want to give them all a hug. They’re so young, and it reminds me how much things have changed. It’s funny to think about me doing the same things at their age, but mostly it’s really heartwarming, and I hope they’re enjoying themselves.

McLaughlin will be the main actor in the series, alongside John Lithgow playing Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
Warwick Davis, who was in previous films, will be back as Filius Flitwick.
JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, has received criticism for her opinions on transgender rights. In 2020, she published a detailed essay explaining her views on sex and gender, which was challenged and refuted by LGBTQ+ organizations like Stonewall.
J.K. Rowling has publicly expressed her opinions on social media, most recently in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter). In that post, she stated that she doesn’t believe children can be transgender and rejected the concept of someone being born with a gender identity that doesn’t match their assigned sex at birth.
In May 2025, J.K. Rowling created the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to provide financial support for legal battles aimed at protecting women’s rights as defined by biological sex.
The main actors from the Harry Potter films – Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – have publicly disagreed with J.K. Rowling’s views and voiced their support for the transgender community. Meanwhile, other cast members like Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, and Jim Broadbent have come to Rowling’s defense amidst the criticism she’s faced.
