After Stranger Things Season 5, Part 1, These 5 Characters Are the Most Likely To Die (Ranked)

Okay, so as a huge Stranger Things fan, I’ve been reading a lot about the final season, and it’s looking like some of our beloved characters might not make it to the end. Season 5 started with four episodes on November 26th, 2025, and we’ll get three more on Christmas Day, finishing up with a big finale on New Year’s Eve. Honestly, after ten years with these characters, it’s going to be heartbreaking to say goodbye to any of them, but the Duffer brothers have been hinting that some tough choices are coming. It’s going to be an emotional ride, that’s for sure!

The creators of Stranger Things have hinted at shocking and surprising deaths in the show’s final season, as the story of Hawkins, Indiana, and its battle with the Upside Down comes to a close. This means no character is safe, and after watching the first part of season 5, we believe five major characters are likely to die. Be careful – this article contains significant spoilers for the first four episodes as we speculate about who might not survive the remaining episodes.

5) Max Mayfield

Sadie Sink became a key character on Stranger Things when she joined as Max Mayfield in season 2. At the end of season 4, the villain Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) seemingly killed Max, though Eleven managed to save her mind. However, season 5 revealed that Max’s consciousness is trapped within a mental prison built from the memories of Henry Creel. The sixth episode of season 5, “Escape from Camazotz,” will likely focus on Max and Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) escaping this prison, and we predict Max might make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure Holly’s freedom.

4) Mike Wheeler

In the fifth season of Stranger Things, Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) has stepped up as the group’s voice of reason, showing care for his siblings, Holly and Nancy (Natalia Dyer), offering solid advice to his friends, and protecting those targeted by Vecna. Interestingly, other shows often kill off characters who have become the moral center just before a big conflict, which doesn’t bode well for Mike. If Mike were to die, it would likely motivate Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) in their final battle with Vecna, and would finally bring a significant loss to the Wheeler family – something that feels like it’s been foreshadowed for a while.

3) Eleven, aka Jane Hopper

Even though fans would love to see Eleven make it through the final season of Stranger Things, it’s probable she won’t. Her escape from Hawkins Lab is what started everything, but her powers, while essential to defeating Vecna, could ultimately lead to her death. Many believe Eleven will sacrifice herself to save her friends and the world, which would be a powerful, though heartbreaking, end to her story. While sad, it wouldn’t be a shock if Eleven died.

2) Will Byers

In the fourth episode of Stranger Things season 5, titled “Sorcerer,” Will Byers reached his full potential by connecting with Vecna’s mind, allowing him to destroy three Demogorgons. This establishes Will as a crucial player in the upcoming showdown with Vecna, but it may come at a great cost. Fans have drawn parallels between Will’s connection to Vecna and the relationship between Harry Potter and Voldemort, remembering that Potter had to sacrifice himself to defeat the Dark Lord. This suggests a potentially tragic fate for Will in the final episodes of Stranger Things.

1) Henry Creel, aka Vecna

Fans predict several main characters might die in the final season of Stranger Things, but most agree that Vecna is the most likely to meet his end. Originally known as Henry Creel, he became the monstrous villain we see after Eleven banished him to another dimension. Now, he’s trying to take over the world, and defeating him will likely require a team effort from powerful characters like Eleven, Will, and Kali. While there’s a small chance Creel could somehow survive or even find redemption, it seems more probable that good will triumph and Vecna will be destroyed.
