Over Two Years Later, Marvel’s Blade Star Has Disappointing Update on MCU Movie

The new Blade movie from Marvel Studios has been in development for a remarkably long time – longer than any other Marvel Cinematic Universe project, and so far, there’s nothing to show for it. While films like Ant-Man and Black Panther also took a few years to come together, they eventually got made and became important parts of the MCU. Blade has the same potential to be a big hit, but despite several attempts with different writers and directors, it remains largely unseen by fans – almost like a legend.

As a huge movie fan, I’m still really excited about the Blade reboot, and I’m so glad Mahershala Ali is still on board to play the Daywalker! But something else that has me hyped is Mia Goth. She’s become a real scream queen with the X movies and now Frankenstein, and she signed on to Blade way back in April 2023. Apparently, like the rest of the cast and crew, she’s in the dark about what’s happening with the project now, but she did hint at a really interesting idea they were exploring – it’s a shame to hear that might not be happening anymore!

Mia Goth Offers Her Take on Blade Delays

When Anya Taylor-Joy was originally cast in Blade, the movie was planned to be different: it would have taken place in the 1920s. Early ideas for the film featured her playing the Marvel villain Lilith. However, the period setting seems to have been dropped, and some of the work done for Blade – including costumes – was actually purchased by Warner Bros. and used in their 2024 film, Sinners. Despite these changes, Taylor-Joy is still involved in Blade, though she jokingly avoids answering when it will be released.

Goth shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she’s unsure about the hold-up with the film. She believes the filmmakers are being careful because the project is so important to them, and she doesn’t have any details about the reasons for the delay. She hopes more information will become available soon.

It’s unexpected that Mia Goth is still involved with the Blade movie, considering the significant shift in its setting. It’s currently unknown whether she’ll reprise her role as Lillith in this new, contemporary version of Blade, or play a different character entirely. However, Goth has hinted at how unique and promising the original 1920s concept for the film was.

I went to Atlanta and did a chemistry read with Mahershala, along with costume and wig fittings. I was really pleased with how things were developing, and Mahershala had a fascinating perspective. He was fantastic. Sadly, the project fell apart after that.

Marvel fans are eager to see Blade as a main character in the MCU, especially since his brief voice appearance in Eternals officially introduced him to the universe. Unfortunately, it looks like fans will be waiting a while longer. Marvel Studios only has two movies planned for next year – Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday – and just one in 2027, Avengers: Secret Wars. A good opportunity to introduce Blade might be after Secret Wars, when the MCU is likely to shift its focus. For now, fans and those working on the project will need to be patient.
