Alcock first appeared briefly in Superman, quickly becoming a popular character that audiences wanted to see more of. A recent Forbes cover story highlighted actress Milly Alcock’s quick success, from being relatively unknown to starring in HBO’s House of the Dragon and then landing a major role in a DC film released this summer. The article mentioned the upcoming Supergirl movie as having a $200 million budget, which quickly caught the attention of DC fans. When asked about this on Threads, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that the reported budget was completely inaccurate, stating, “Not even a little bit true.”
It’s fairly new for movie fans to focus so much on how much big films cost, and it shouldn’t necessarily drive conversations about developing franchises. However, learning that Supergirl has a smaller budget than Superman and many other superhero movies is actually a positive thing.
Expectations were enormous for Superman before it came out, as its success was crucial for starting a larger film universe. Now, Supergirl has a different challenge: proving that Superman wasn’t just a one-time success and that the DC Universe can support diverse stories and filmmaking approaches. Thankfully, Supergirl doesn’t need to earn a massive $500 million to be considered successful – achieving that amount would simply make it a hit.
In a Forbes interview, actress Milly Alcock shared her initial reaction to being cast as Supergirl, describing it as a feeling of both excitement and nervousness.
“I immediately wondered what I’d gotten myself into,” Alcock explained. “I honestly doubted my ability to pull it off. I even spoke to the director, telling them I wasn’t sure I could become that character—that I was just playing myself. But eventually, I realized I had to have faith in my own instincts. I truly believe everything happens at the right moment, regardless of whether you feel prepared.”
Supergirl is set to arrive in theaters on June 26, 2026.
