Okay, so I was starting to think we’d never hear about the new Splinter Cell remake, but Ubisoft finally dropped some news! They’re known for huge franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six, and Splinter Cell is definitely one of their best – it was a massive deal when it first came out on the original Xbox and PS2. I remember it being a really cool, serious spy game with awesome stealth. It definitely took some inspiration from Metal Gear Solid, but it had its own vibe – it wasn’t as… weird, you know? It felt more grounded. Sadly, the series kind of disappeared after Splinter Cell: Blacklist back in 2013, and I was worried it was gone for good.
While the original game was well-received, it didn’t perform as well commercially as Ubisoft had hoped, leading to a long pause in the series. Rumors surfaced in the late 2010s about a new Splinter Cell game being in development, but it was reportedly cancelled and resources shifted to XDefiant. However, the producer of XDefiant claims it wasn’t a replacement for a cancelled Splinter Cell project. Despite this, fans continued to ask for a revival, and Ubisoft announced a Splinter Cell remake back in 2021. Unfortunately, there haven’t been many updates about the remake since then.
Splinter Cell Remake Re-Hires the Original Director for the Project
For years, fans have been asking about the progress of the Splinter Cell remake. Now, it looks like development is moving forward again. David Grivel, the original director of Splinter Cell, has announced on LinkedIn (reported by GamesRadar) that he’s rejoining Ubisoft to lead the remake. He previously left the project in October 2022 to work on the Battlefield 6 campaign at EA’s Ridgeline Games. However, that studio closed down in 2024, and Grivel has now returned to Ubisoft to resume his role on Splinter Cell.
Grivel is back as the director of the Splinter Cell remake, which is great news! He previously had a clear vision for the project, so this should help ensure the remake stays true to the original while still feeling modern. It suggests the game is in safe hands and hopefully has been progressing steadily. While there’s still no release date, this news confirms Ubisoft remains committed to finishing the Splinter Cell remake – a really encouraging sign for fans.
