Last month, during the annual N7 Day celebration for the Mass Effect series, BioWare shared a sneak peek – a hidden message revealing concept art of a Krogan Civil War. With the next Mass Effect game likely still several years away, fans have been analyzing every small hint for clues about the story. BioWare isn’t giving much away, but I’ve been thinking about what the concept art and other teasers might mean for the future of the series.
As a big fan, I’ve been hoping for detailed predictions about where the story is going, but honestly, I think BioWare is mostly focusing on the big picture right now. It sounds like they’re still figuring out all the smaller details. With Dragon Age: The Veilguard coming out just over a year ago, and then the recent layoffs and changes at the studio, there are fewer than 100 people working on the game now. And Mass Effect 5? They announced that five years ago! It’s been a huge task just rebuilding the entire galaxy for that one, so it makes sense things are taking time.
Mass Effect 5 Concept Art Is Establishing A Canon Milky Way

One of the biggest challenges in making a new Mass Effect game set in the original galaxy is figuring out how to respect the decisions players made in the first three games – that’s why Andromeda started fresh with a new setting. Everything suggests the next game, ME5, will take place after the events of Mass Effect 3, specifically following the ending where the Reapers are destroyed, which is now considered the official ending of the trilogy.
The “Synthesis” ending seems unlikely because we haven’t seen any artwork showing a combination of living and artificial life. While “Control” is a possible ending for Mass Effect 3, some details suggest it’s less probable than “Destroy.” I’ve included a gallery of five important pieces of Mass Effect concept art above, which I believe provide clues about the setting of the next game, Mass Effect 5.
One poster shows a crater shaped like a Geth head, highlighting the fact that destroying the Reapers also means destroying the Geth. However, the trailer that goes with the poster suggests the crater is actually where Commander Shepard lands after surviving the game’s ‘Destroy’ ending – the only way to achieve that outcome.
The unusual Geth structure could be a beautiful design choice, or it might suggest that the Geth’s collective intelligence was either restored after the events of Mass Effect 3 or somehow endured the Crucible. A preview released on N7 Day in 2022 seemed to support this idea, featuring audio of Liara T’Soni apparently communicating with a Geth.
Perhaps the most significant discovery is the image of a Mass Relay being built. Its design strongly suggests it’s from the Systems Alliance, implying the Mass Relay network is being reconstructed after its destruction in Mass Effect 3. The fact that it’s still under construction likely means the ‘Control’ ending isn’t considered official story canon. If it were, the Reapers, being under control, could have rebuilt the network much faster.
Okay, so I was looking at the images, and the third one is really interesting. It seems to show an Angara – that alien race from the Andromeda galaxy – hanging out with Milky Way species. This makes me think the new Mass Relays aren’t just for getting around within our galaxy, but could actually let you travel between the Milky Way and Andromeda pretty quickly! But here’s the thing: that would mean Mass Effect 5 happens after the events of Andromeda. And if that’s true, with the 634-year time jump from the first game, it would be super complicated to bring Shepard back, even if they did survive the Crucible. It’s a lot to think about!
The central image on the poster shows how the Spectres from the Mass Effect universe have changed since the Mass Relays were destroyed. It was revealed alongside a teaser trailer for N7 Day 2023. The characters’ clothing – or lack of heavy armor – might suggest that the next Mass Effect game, likely Mass Effect 5, will focus on a conflict that’s less massive than the Reaper War. This fits with the idea that the galaxy hasn’t fully recovered and doesn’t yet have the same network of Mass Relays as before.
I think the fourth image suggests a significant time jump of several centuries after the events of Mass Effect 3, positioning Mass Effect 5 sometime after Andromeda in the overall story. The image depicts a bustling city, though people are wearing masks. Even without Mass Relays for around 600 years, a fragmented galaxy could still develop, and this artwork likely shows a city on a planet lacking breathable air.
It’s unlikely Liara’s voice in the Mass Relay video is a mistake, considering Asari can live for over a thousand years. However, I think the first teaser for Mass Effect 5 is mostly symbolic. Finding Shepard’s broken armor doesn’t necessarily mean the Commander will be back in ME5, unless they somehow live much longer than expected.
Mass Effect 5’s Latest Teaser Image Canonizes The Genophage Cure
The last piece of artwork shown is a recent concept piece from BioWare called “Civil War,” depicting only Krogan warriors. While it doesn’t immediately reveal much – the Krogan are often fighting amongst themselves – the fact that it’s one of the few images released to hint at the next Mass Effect game suggests this conflict will be important.
The Krogan were already depicted as a declining species in the original Mass Effect trilogy. Without time travel in Mass Effect 5, a large-scale Krogan civil war wouldn’t be realistic unless the Genophage is resolved. I believe this recent concept art hints at the central conflict of ME5, and it aligns with the themes suggested by earlier artwork.
Here’s how I envision the start of Mass Effect 5. If Shepard chose to cure the Genophage and survived the ‘Destroy’ ending, they would live just long enough to witness the Citadel Council – or a new council hinted at in Liara’s recordings – begin rebuilding a shattered Milky Way.
Over the next six centuries, humans gradually figure out how Mass Relay technology works, eventually re-establishing contact with the Andromeda Galaxy. The Geth are also rebuilt, but this time they’re integrated into galactic society more peacefully, and they might even help build new Mass Relays using information recovered from the Heretics who served Sovereign.
As a big Mass Effect fan, I’ve been thinking about the Krogan. It’s cool that the Genophage is gone, letting their population really grow. But what’s interesting is that because interstellar travel is still limited, they’ve been able to thrive without immediately starting up old conflicts that could threaten everyone. However, it looks like once faster travel becomes common again, right before the events of Mass Effect 5, all that pent-up tension finally explodes into a full-scale Krogan civil war. It’s a really compelling setup for the next game, honestly!
Over two millennia after the devastating Krogan Rebellions – and with those hard-won lessons now largely forgotten – a new civil war is tearing apart a galaxy that’s only recently begun to recover. Similar to how Spectres were used during the Krogan Rebellions before the Turians implemented the Genophage, a newly assigned N7 operative is sent to resolve the conflict and prevent warring Krogan groups from controlling the newly discovered Mass Relay network.
Liara is expected to return and will probably be central to the main mystery in Mass Effect 5. This setup lets the game revisit familiar themes and storylines from the original trilogy, while also allowing it to easily explain away choices players made as Shepard. It also creates high enough stakes – a galaxy at risk – for the new story to feel important, without needing to surpass the scale of the Reaper War.
