Kelly Clarkson has been waiting for a moment like this.
The singer treated her children, 11-year-old River Rose and 9-year-old Remington, to a quintessential New York City experience: ice skating at Rockefeller Center, where she also tapes her show, The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Kelly shared a family photo on Instagram from a recent ice skating trip. She wore a white beanie and a black fur-lined coat. Her daughter, River, looked happy in a purple coat and bright pink beanie, while her brother, Remington, waved to the camera wearing a blue coat, yellow hat, and a lightning bolt shirt.
Kelly captioned the sweet photo, “Ice skating at 30 Rock with the family.”
Being a mom to her two children with her late ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, can be challenging for the 43-year-old, and she sometimes feels overwhelmed.
Kelly Clarkson recently shared with Mariska Hargitay on her show that she often looks at her daughter and thinks to herself, ‘I’m doing the best I can.’
Honestly, she once told me she fully expects I’ll be in therapy someday. She couldn’t pinpoint why, but she said she’s doing everything she can to prevent it – which is… something, I guess. It’s a weird thing to say, but it stuck with me.
Despite everything, she’s getting stronger with each passing day. She even shared that becoming a mother herself has helped her understand her own parents better.
“It is interesting,” Kelly noted. “You understand them in a different light.”
She added, “You have a little but more empathy than you might have had in your 20s.”
And from her own experiences, she’s learned what she wants to prioritize when it comes to her kids.
Kelly says she makes a point of asking her children every night while they cuddle if they’re happy, and if not, what would improve their mood. She shared this on the Angie Martinez IRL Podcast in March 2024, explaining that her kids are very open with her, and she wants to encourage that honesty as she raises them.

Sadly, things changed, and Kelly filed for divorce from Brandon the following year. The divorce was finalized in 2022, and they both moved on with their lives.
