Only a week after announcing it would sell Arc Games, Embracer Group has confirmed that Arc Games is now operating as an independent publisher. This change was made possible by financial backing from XD Inc., which allowed Arc Games’ management to buy the company from Embracer, securing its independence.
After becoming independent, the publisher plans to keep its current team and structure in place, with Yoon Im remaining as CEO. The company is also actively preparing to release a number of new games, including both mid-range titles and projects developed through partnerships with independent studios.
In a recent announcement, Im, speaking for Arc Games, stated that the company is entering a new phase of independence. They expressed gratitude for their time as part of Embracer Group and acknowledged the successes they’ve built over the past 15 years, noting that these experiences have been crucial in shaping Arc Games into what it is today.
Now that we’re an independent publisher, we can fully focus on our goals: working with talented developers around the globe and releasing truly special games. We’re planning a very ambitious and innovative 2026, and we’re thrilled about the future.
Arc Games began as Perfect World Entertainment in 2008. It became known for publishing popular free-to-play online games like Neverwinter and Star Trek Online. More recently, over the past ten years, the company expanded to publish larger “AA” titles, including Remnant 2 from Gunfire Games (released in 2023), the Torchlight series, and the cooperative RPG Fellowship. Arc Games has also supported independent games such as Have a Nice Death and Frosthaven.
Embracer Group’s CEO, Phil Rogers, explained that the sale of Arc Games and Cryptic Studios was intended to strengthen the company’s finances, while still retaining ownership of key game properties. Originally, Embracer had planned to keep the Fellowship game as part of its portfolio, but ultimately decided to divest it as well.
According to Rogers, this deal helps Embracer concentrate on its most important games and technologies, ultimately boosting profits and cash flow. It also provides a solid future for the online multiplayer game Fellowship, created by a skilled team in Stockholm, by bringing it under the Coffee Stain Group umbrella. Rogers expressed gratitude to the teams at Arc and Cryptic for their dedication over the last four years and wished them continued success.
Arc Games’ latest release is Fellowship, launched in October. It’s a game where players team up with three others, each with a unique role, to tackle increasingly challenging dungeons. The developers describe it as a fresh approach to endgame content in MMORPGs, designed to skip the usual repetitive tasks before reaching the core gameplay.
