Stranger Things’ New Spinoff Is Out Now, Set Between Season 4 & 5

A new book connected to the show Stranger Things will reveal what happened between the fourth and fifth seasons. The first part of Season 5 began on November 27th, showing a drastically changed Hawkins. A major 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit the town, and along with it, new openings to the Upside Down appeared. These rifts stayed open for almost two years, lasting until November 1987. Hawkins was put under quarantine and military control after being covered in strange particles from the Upside Down.

A new novel, “One Way or Another” by Stranger Things writer Caitlin Scheiderhan – whose credits include the Season 5 episode “The Turnbow Trap” – is set during those 20 months. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

The town of Hawkins, Indiana is still recovering after Vecna’s attack caused widespread destruction two months ago. Nancy Wheeler has been relentlessly searching for Vecna, but he remains hidden. She’s worried about starting college in the fall with Hawkins still threatened by the Upside Down.

When a classmate, Joey Taft, starts behaving strangely at graduation, Nancy suspects he’s Vecna’s next target. Teaming up with Robin Buckley, Nancy immediately begins questioning Joey. Their investigation quickly uncovers a mystery far bigger than anything Nancy could report as a journalist for The Hawkins Post. They start to wonder why people in town are suddenly falling ill, why a mysterious man is following Nancy, and if all of this is connected to the Upside Down.

Is This The First of Many Nancy Wheeler Mysteries?

The book cover includes a banner calling this “A Nancy Wheeler Mystery,” which is a clever nod to the classic “Nancy Drew Mystery” book series that was popular from 1930 to 2003. Throughout Stranger Things, people have often jokingly—and sometimes critically—compared Nancy Wheeler to Nancy Drew. The Hawkins Post newspaper, in particular, doubted a girl could solve the strange mysteries happening in town, but they’ve repeatedly been proven wrong.

Look, Netflix is really pushing for more content set in the world of Stranger Things, and honestly, I’m cautiously optimistic. This new book feels like a test run – maybe to see if they can build a whole series around it, or just a single show. But it does deliver on what it promises: a glimpse into life in Hawkins between those intense seasons four and five. And it’s smart to focus on Nancy and Robin – their dynamic in season four was fantastic, and I think readers will really enjoy seeing more of their partnership. It’s a fun read that expands the universe without feeling essential, which is a good sign for potential spinoffs.
