Captain America’s Most Iconic MCU Scenes Only Exist Thanks to the Worst Avengers Movie

Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America has given us many memorable moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but two stand out as truly iconic. These powerful scenes, where he passes the shield to Sam Wilson, wouldn’t have the same impact without the events of what is considered the weakest Avengers film. The journey to that moment – including Steve Rogers traveling forward in time and questioning his own values – is what truly defines his character. This growth makes his final scene, and his passing of the shield, incredibly meaningful.

Captain America arguably has one of the most satisfying story arcs of the original Avengers. He finally gets a happy ending with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and is crucial to defeating Thanos (Josh Brolin), solidifying his role as the Avengers’ leader in Infinity War and Endgame. The latter film especially shows how much he grows emotionally and physically, and some of its most powerful scenes are foreshadowed earlier in the story.

Captain America’s Most Iconic MCU Scenes Are Both in Avengers: Endgame

Captain America has two truly unforgettable moments in Avengers: Endgame. The first happens immediately after Hulk reverses Thanos’ snap. Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor team up to fight Thanos, but they’re struggling, especially Thor. Just when things look bleak, Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, flies into his hand… but it’s not Thor who summons it! Captain America unexpectedly wields Mjolnir with one hand while still holding his shield. The image was stunning and earned a huge reaction from audiences in theaters.

Later in the battle, Captain America has another key moment when reinforcements arrive to help fight Thanos. The heroes brought back by the time-reversing portal jump into the fight, and Steve Rogers finally says the two words Marvel fans had been hoping to hear for years: “Avengers assemble.” This iconic line, taken directly from the comics, is incredibly impactful after more than ten years of build-up within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, both Cap wielding Mjolnir and his call to action echo events from the film Avengers: Age of Ultron.

These Captain America Scenes Pay Off Moments From Avengers: Age of Ultron

Okay, so as a huge Marvel fan, I’ll admit Age of Ultron isn’t quite as strong as the other Avengers films – though honestly, even a ‘weak’ Avengers movie is still pretty fantastic! But it definitely has some really great scenes. I always loved the playful back-and-forth between the team, and it’s actually that dynamic that sets up one of the coolest moments later on. Remember the party at Avengers Tower where everyone tries to lift Thor’s hammer? It’s hilarious how none of them can do it, but you can see Thor get genuinely worried when Captain America tries. He just knows Cap’s the one who might actually be worthy! And it totally pays off in Endgame – when Cap finally lifts Mjolnir, it’s such a powerful moment and really shows how much he’d grown throughout the whole Infinity Saga.

Avengers: Endgame fulfills a promise made in Age of Ultron, finally letting Captain America deliver his iconic “Avengers assemble” line. The film shows Steve Rogers gathering the new team – Sam, Rhodey, Vision, and Wanda – and officially addressing them as “Avengers” before the credits roll. While hinted at before, Endgame is where the team truly operates as a cohesive unit. This moment completes a story arc that began years ago, rewarding viewers who have followed the characters’ journeys throughout 23 movies.

These Moments Prove How Important Avengers: Age of Ultron Is

While often considered weaker than other Avengers movies, Age of Ultron is actually a crucial film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many criticize it for a lackluster villain and distracting side stories, and it’s true the plot isn’t as focused as in other Avengers films. However, Age of Ultron is essential because it directly leads into the events of Captain America: Civil War and fundamentally changes the Avengers’ relationships. Looking back, it even sets up smaller, rewarding moments throughout later films, making it more impactful than many realize.
