As a huge Shovel Knight fan, I was really worried to read a new report from Bloomberg saying that Yacht Club Games might be facing some serious difficulties. It’s behind a paywall, but the news is definitely concerning for anyone who loves their games!
The team behind Mina the Hollower, a promising 2D action adventure game, has faced challenges during development, despite the impressive visuals shown in trailers.
The report indicates that Yacht Club had to reduce its team size to just 15 people while creating the game.
Mina the Hollower was originally planned to come out earlier in 2024, but the developers had to postpone its release. As of now, there’s no new date for when the game will be available.
The game has only recently become fully playable, and testing it has revealed a number of problems that still need to be addressed.
Sean Velasco, who helped start Yacht Club, says the success or failure of their new game will determine the studio’s future, as its sales are critical to staying afloat.
The team believes they need to sell around 200,000 copies to be successful. Selling significantly fewer copies would create challenges.
The game looks fantastic, with a style reminiscent of classic Game Boy Colour titles. It’s an adventure where you’ll use different skills and weapons – think a whip similar to those in Castlevania, and the ability to dig underground to get around.
Even if it’s not perfect, this project needs to succeed for Yacht Club. They’re currently facing financial difficulties and have already had to postpone another 3D game.
