Master Chief Had Several Potential Designs

Marcus Lehto, a key creator of the Halo series, recently shared insights into the development of the first game with Kent State Magazine. He revealed that designing Master Chief’s now-famous Spartan armor wasn’t easy, and involved many revisions to get the character’s look and feel just right. Lehto explained he went through numerous design iterations to achieve the perfect appearance and presence for the character. Early concepts, like those by artist Shi Kai Wang, have been shown before – they featured a more streamlined design for the Chief, including a bandolier and a slimmer build.
Early designs for Master Chief were considered too flashy and didn’t capture the raw power the character needed. As the design evolved, the team drew inspiration from real-world military hardware like the M1 Abrams tank and Apache helicopter. This focus on practicality is probably why Master Chief often appears tank-like, subtly reinforcing his image as a formidable and unstoppable warrior.
It took Lehto and the Bungie team nine tries to finalize the character’s design. Since then, Master Chief has become an iconic figure in gaming, and his strong, functional armor immediately conveys the serious, military-focused action of the game. Lehto explained, “We kept working at it because I learned at Kent State that you don’t give up after just one attempt.”
