Sword Art Online’s Creator Has a Brand New Anime on the Way: First Look Revealed

Reki Kawahara, known for creating popular anime like Sword Art Online and Accel World, has a new series being adapted into an anime, and we’re getting our first glimpse of it. Sword Art Online has become a major anime franchise over the past twenty years. While not the first of its kind, it was one of the first to use a virtual world setting and captured the attention of a whole generation of anime fans at just the right moment.

The incredible success of Sword Art Online led to numerous sequels, movies, video games, and spin-offs. Following this, Kadokawa adapted another of Reki Kawahara’s series, Accel World, into an anime and film. Now, Kadokawa is revisiting Kawahara’s work again, announcing an official anime adaptation of his newest light novel series, Demon’s Crest. You can see a first look at the artwork, illustrated by the series’ artist, Yukiko Horiguchi, below.

Demon’s Crest Anime Officially Announced

The popular game Demon’s Crest is getting an anime adaptation! While details are currently scarce – including the release date, studio, and staff – fans are excited about the announcement. Those familiar with the work of creator Reki Kawahara will notice similarities to his other projects, as this series is also set within a large, immersive virtual game world. More information will likely be revealed at a later date, so fans may have a bit of a wait.

Yen Press is publishing the Demon’s Crest novels in English, and three volumes are currently available. The story centers around a group of sixth-grade students who become trapped in “Actual Magic,” a dangerous virtual reality game where their lives are at risk. When a demon takes control of the main character’s sister, the students find a potential path to understanding the game and escaping before it’s too late. With the author continuing to write new installments, the future of this series is wide open.

What’s Going on With Sword Art Online?

With an anime adaptation now announced for Demon’s Crest, fans are wondering what’s next for Sword Art Online. The popular series is currently celebrating a milestone anniversary, but there haven’t been any announcements about its future. The anime finished the Alicization arc with a hint that the ongoing Unital Ring arc would be adapted next, but that was several years ago, and we haven’t heard anything since.

Lately, we’ve gotten some movies and shows related to the Sword Art Online universe, but they haven’t quite felt like the real thing. Seeing projects like the upcoming Demon’s Crest anime gives me hope that we can get our fix while we wait for the next major Sword Art Online story. It might take a little while, though.
