A key creator of the beloved RPG Chrono Trigger, originally released for Super Nintendo in 1995, has hinted at a possible remake. With Square Enix successfully remaking classic games in a distinctive “HD-2D” style, fans have been eager to see Chrono Trigger receive the same treatment. Although the game recently celebrated its 30th anniversary without a remake announcement, there’s still optimism that a new version could happen.
During a recent YouTube panel, Yuji Horii, one of the creators of Chrono Trigger, was questioned about a possible remake of the game. He didn’t confirm or deny the project, explaining he’d be reprimanded by his superiors if he discussed it. While his answer was vague, the fact that he didn’t deny a remake is being seen as a potentially positive sign.

Given enough time, it feels inevitable that Square Enix will remake Chrono Trigger. It’s arguably the most likely candidate in their library to receive the HD-2D graphical update, which would significantly enhance its appearance. Although the game has been released on various platforms like PlayStation, Nintendo DS, PC, and mobile, fans have been requesting a full remake for years. This strong demand suggests a remake would be incredibly successful, and ultimately, that’s likely what will make the project happen.
Many fans are hoping to see a remake of Chrono Trigger in 2026. While we wait, Square Enix is currently working on a remake of Dragon Quest VII, which will be released on most gaming platforms in February.
