The TARDIS from Doctor Who is one of the most iconic vehicles in science fiction. For over 60 years, this incredible machine – larger inside than it appears, and able to travel anywhere in time and space – has been a constant companion to the Doctor. Interestingly, despite changes to other elements of the show, the TARDIS has consistently maintained the look of a classic blue police box. A comic story published in Doctor Who Magazine for the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013, called “Hunters of the Burning Stone,” explains why the TARDIS is stuck in this form, honoring the show and its characters as television legends.
When Doctor Who first aired in 1963, William Hartnell, as the First Doctor, brought his initial companions – teachers Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton – inside the TARDIS. The original idea was for the TARDIS to disguise itself by changing its appearance to match its surroundings using a ‘chameleon circuit’. However, creating a different exterior for the TARDIS each time became too expensive. So, the writers decided the circuit was broken and couldn’t be fixed. It wasn’t until 50 years later that the show provided a story within the show explaining how the chameleon circuit failed, resulting in the TARDIS’s famous blue police box design.
The Doctor Broke the TARDIS’s Chameleon Circuit to Save Humanity

In “Hunters of the Burning Stone,” the Eleventh Doctor teams up with his original companions, Barbara and Ian, to battle the Prometheans. These aliens stripped humans of their higher emotions, intending to rule them through fear and have them worship the Prometheans as gods. They use a Sun-shaped metal that affects minds, filling people with terror. However, the Doctor discovers something unexpected: a hidden image of the TARDIS in everyone’s subconscious. Throughout his many travels through time, the Doctor unintentionally left a mental imprint of the blue police box on the minds of people throughout history, with evidence of the TARDIS appearing in art and stories as far back as the Stone Age.
It was incredible to see the Doctor use the power of imagination to change the Prometheans’ sun – that terrifying psychic force – into the image of the TARDIS! It actually broke the mental chains holding humanity captive and helped us overcome our fear. But the Doctor didn’t stop there. To make sure the TARDIS would always look the same, becoming a lasting symbol of hope for everyone, he went back to 1963, right to the very beginning of Doctor Who. He deliberately broke the chameleon circuit, which meant the TARDIS would be stuck looking like a police box forever. It was a brilliant move, cementing that iconic image in our minds.
The TARDIS’s Police Box Form Represents the Doctor’s Role in the Universe

For hundreds of years, the Doctor has traveled through space and time, always ready to help those in need. The story “Hunters of the Burning Stone” clearly shows the Doctor’s purpose: to guide and protect humanity. He’s saved Earth countless times, becoming a legendary figure and embedding the TARDIS in our shared history. The TARDIS is so iconic that even people who’ve never seen a British police box instantly recognize it as a symbol of rescue. Interestingly, the comic reveals that the TARDIS actually inspired the design of those very police boxes, which were created as places for people to call for help during emergencies.
I’ve always been fascinated by how deeply the Doctor has touched humanity, even without meaning to! It’s amazing to think that, as shown in “A Good Man Goes to War,” he actually inspired people to associate the word “doctor” with healing and wisdom. And the TARDIS! That humble police box became a symbol of safety and security, and it’s brilliantly used in “Hunters of the Burning Stone” to represent the Doctor’s lasting influence – not just within the show, but on science fiction as a whole. Through all his adventures and acts of courage, the Doctor, with the help of his incredible TARDIS, has become a truly timeless icon of hope.
