King of the Hill Really Needs to Address Luanne’s Absence Next Season

The revival of King of the Hill has been renewed for three more seasons, but the show needs to explain what happened to Luanne Platter. The series surprisingly returned on Hulu this summer, picking up eight years after the original ended and showing fans where their favorite characters are now. Despite covering a lot of ground, the show never addressed Luanne’s unexplained absence.

The fourteenth season of King of the Hill showed fans what happened to the characters years later, but some familiar faces haven’t reappeared. While it’s understandable that the revival couldn’t include every reunion fans hoped for, the complete absence of Luanne is noticeable. She isn’t mentioned at all in the new season, and the show really needs to address this if it continues.

What Happened to Luanne?

With the revival of King of the Hill coming to Hulu, a lot of fans were wondering what would happen with Luanne. The original voice actress, Brittany Murphy, sadly passed away, and everyone was curious if they’d find someone new to take on the role. It was a real question mark, especially since the show had already recast Dale Gribble after Johnny Hardwick’s passing, and even brought in Ronnie Chieng to voice Kahn. So, Luanne’s fate was definitely up in the air.

Before the show’s return, creator Saladin K. Patterson announced that the character of Luanne wouldn’t be replaced. Instead, she’d be written out of the series with a sense of respect. Patterson compared it to a sports team retiring a player’s jersey – a way to acknowledge their contribution. He felt it wouldn’t be appropriate to find a new actress for the role, but hinted that the show would still find ways to pay tribute to Luanne through the storyline. He didn’t reveal details, but assured fans they hadn’t forgotten her.

Fans were eager to see what the revival held for Luanne, a beloved character from the original series, along with Lucky (voiced by the late Tom Petty). The show had significantly changed things in Arlen, Texas, and the time jump offered a chance to explain Luanne’s absence. Her missing presence was noticeable, taking away from the show’s appeal, and viewers hoped for a clear reason why she wasn’t included. Unfortunately, that explanation never came.

Now’s The Chance to Fix This Issue

Luanne was a vital part of the original King of the Hill series, and her absence is definitely noticeable in the new episodes. She brought a lively energy that created interesting interactions with all the characters. It’s strange that she isn’t mentioned at all – not even a passing reference – and she’s barely seen, aside from a photo on the wall. This feels especially odd given how close she was to her Aunt Peggy. The fact that she supposedly moved to Saudi Arabia and came back years later without anyone acknowledging it just seems unnatural.

Unlike most animated sitcoms from its time, King of the Hill felt more like a continuous story with ups and downs, even though each episode usually had a self-contained plot. Events in the show genuinely impacted the characters – Hank and the others experienced things and reflected on them, changing and growing realistically. This grounded approach is what makes the storyline of Luanne’s disappearance so unusual.

While the revival season of King of the Hill is generally excellent, one thing didn’t quite work: Luanne’s storyline. Because the season was shorter than previous ones—only ten episodes—it had to move quickly and pack a lot into each episode to appeal to modern TV viewers. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time to give Luanne a proper conclusion, and resolving her story should be the priority for the next season.
